Outline of
Module on Structural Systems
• Introduction
• Type of Structures and Structure’s Form
• Aspect Ratio
• Overturning Resistance
• Strength and Stiffness
Introduction
• The term structural system or structural frame is
refers to the load resisting sub system of a building
or object.
• The structural system transfers loads through
interconnected elements or members.
• The structural systems or structural frames can be
defined as the assembly of inter –related or inter-
dependent elements which forms a complex
structures, and they are designed and built for
resisting different loads.
Types of Structural and structural forms
• Load Bearing Systems
• Framed Systems
• Shell Systems
• Strut and Tie
Load Bearing Systems
• It is a structural system where loads of buildings
i.e. weight of building itself plus the live loads get
transferred to the ground through walls. Walls bear
the load of roofs, floor and of course self weight.

Framed Structural Systems
• Frame structures are the structures having the combination of beam,
column and slab to resist the lateral and gravity loads. These structures are
usually used to overcome the large moments developing due to the
applied loading.
• Framed Structures Can be differentiated into:
 Rigid Framed Structure
i. Pin Ended
ii. Fixed Ended
 Braced Framed Structures
i. Gable Frame
ii. Portal Frame
