Wireless Networks in
Aircraft
Prepared By:
Sunny chavda and Pankaj Khodifad
B.Tech 6th Semester,
Electronics & Communication Department ,
Institute of Technology, Nirma University.
Content
• Current Issues
• Services
• Wireless Cabin architecture
• Pico cell
• Protocols
• QoS classes
Current Issues
• Aircraft are last remaining islands
• FCC banned cellular phones
-due to channel reuse
-output power of the mobile handset
• FAA also prohibits in-flight use of wireless
devices
-Exceed the permitted interference
-Adversely affect the navigation system
• FAA also regulates all PEDs (like iPods, DVD
players) during flight
• People are becoming more and more used to
personalized equipments
-clear demand for a wireless access through
users’ own equipment
• Also useful for airline personnel
• Cost massive wired network in an aircraft is
saved
• In the past
-only a few kbps
-used for voice and for low rate
communication
• Now, links of Mbps are available to allow for
variety of services and applications
• promising new market is opened for
communication service providers/operators
and airline operators
SERVICES
• Most important standards
-GSM, UMTS with UTRAN air interface, Bluetooth,
and W-LAN
- need to co-exist with each other and wired IP
installations
• For mobile telephony, circuit-switched (CS) or
packet switched(PS) services are supported
• For IP services ,
- typical protocols from business and home
environment are supported

• Connexion by Boeing.
• phased array antenna Ku band antenna
• leased satellite transponders, and ground
stations.
• downlink speeds of up to 20Mbit/s
• uplink speeds up to 2 Mbit/s.
• service began on Lufthansa German Airlines in
May 17, 2004.

Modern wireless network in
aircraft
• Aircell.
• Direct air-to-ground technology.
• 3 MHz air-to-ground spectrum in 800Mhz
band.
• Working with 100 towers in USA.
• service began on American Airlines in July
2008.
Wireless network in aircraft
Picocell
• base station typically covering a small area
Protocols
• Internet Protocol(IP).
• Remote Authentication Dial In User Service
(RADIUS).
• Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
• Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP).
QoS classes
• WirelessCabin first class (Conversational class:
real time/delay intolerant).
• WirelessCabin second class (Streaming class:
real time/delay tolerant).

Editor's Notes

  • #19: The Internet Protocol (IP) is the principal communications protocol used for relaying datagrams (also known as network packets) across an internetwork using the Internet Protocol Suite. Responsible for routing packets across network boundaries, it is the primary protocol that establishes the Internet.Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS) is a networking protocol that provides centralized Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) management for computers to connect and use a network service. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an IETF-defined signaling protocol widely used for controlling communication sessions such as voice and video calls over Internet Protocol (IP). The protocol can be used for creating, modifying and terminating two-party (unicast) or multiparty (multicast) sessions. Sessions may consist of one or several media streams. The Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) is a Transport Layer protocol designed to reserve resources across a network for an integrated services Internet. RSVP operates over an IPv4 or IPv6 Internet Layer and provides receiver-initiated setup of resource reservations for multicast or unicast data flows with scaling and robustness.
