Editor's Notes

  • #2: Hi ITEC 800 classmates, today I am going to introduce my final theory project on the basics of Microsoft Excel for Business Administration. I came about this topic because I have trained colleagues and even my own managers on Excel in the past year, and I decided to create parts of my training in Prezi for any future trainings in the corporate environment. It was surprising to find out that very little people knew anything about using Excel, so I hope my workshop on Basic Excel for Business Administration – which includes the theories learned from class this semester - will effectively help professionals learn and develop another skill.
  • #3: The workshop will cover 5 basic excel tools that a business professional may need in order to analyze data and create visual reports or presentations. Within each tool, definitions and examples that include steps and screenshots will be presented in Prezi.
  • #4: During the workshop, trainees will be able to watch the step by step process explaining each Excel tool, learn, copy the lesson by following along on their own laptops, and finally time will be allowed for individual experimental creation on their own reports. This exemplifies an experiential approach to learning.
  • #5: Andragogy is a teaching and learning strategy for adult learners. The training I created is in a such a platform that I would be teaching what the learners need to know and how to go about the skills to be taught, possibly in person, but learners have the capability to learn through distance education by looking through the presentation on Prezi on their own time.
  • #6: An extension to andragogy, professionals can self-determine which Excel tool they would like to learn and focus on that by experimenting with Excel using my workshop as a foundation. The workshop can be a foundation as it provides screen shots and examples in association to step-by-step instructions, where learners would be able to move forward in their tasks upon gaining the basic Excel knowledge in business administration.
  • #7: Trainees can stay connected with each other by continuing to share Excel ideas, tips, and tricks in future meetings or forums. Online Microsoft Excel forums as well as YouTube videos are available for additional information. There are also online training courses offered for extra training or even for those who wish to obtain a certificate. And of course, in this ever-changing technological world, always remember to update your software to keep up with the fast-paced and competitive environment.
  • #8: This slide reflects the paradigm that I have applied in my Prezi workshop.
  • #9: Moving on, I will go into detail on how I will demonstrate these learning theories into my Excel Workshop.
  • #10: “ “…even though, these theories do not exactly address the challenges of organizational knowledge and application.
  • #11: First, I’m using similar real-life examples from my own experiences to educate people. Heutagogy also values experiences and interactions with others. Second, I would be sharing resources and references I have come across that were helpful to my own learning experience. Third, I would have the class learn through their own experiments to develop their own skills.
  • #12: The Basic Excel Workshop I created can be used in person at corporate trainings and trainees will be able to have access to the same training material by simply clicking on the Prezi link provided. The Prezi link to the workshop would also be available to those who could not make the in-person training. Nonetheless, people are able to self-direct their own learning experience to their interest as Prezi is able to provide an outlook for people to pick and choose which topic they would like to focus on.
  • #13: The Excel Workshop reflects 21st century technological learning, as it provides information readily available to learners anytime and anywhere the learner decides to learn. In this way, the learner is individually capable of deciding when, what, and how to learn and in turn this reflects a learning experience rather than a learning discipline. According to Rogers (1969) from our reading, “From Andragogy to Heutagogy” by Hase & Kenyon, “people learn significantly only those things that they perceive as being involved in the maintenance or enhancement of the structure of self.”
  • #14: Lastly, the principles of connectivism are applied in my Excel Workshop training. Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions or in this case diversity of tips and tricks. Learning resides in non-human appliances, such as the Prezi presentation, YouTube videos, and online forums/blogs. People are capable of deciding in which medium to learn Excel. Whenever there are business meetings, people can facilitate continual learning by sharing how they went about their analysis in Excel, thus the capacity to know more tips/tricks. Knowledge sharing is an aspect of the heutagogy approach to learning. Using Excel itself lies the ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts, which is a core skill of connectivism.
  • #15: Ultimately, this blended learning approach addresses the challenges encountered in a corporate environment to plug in skills of knowledge management in order to cultivate efficient and effective outcomes by enabling proactivity.
