When is a person ready for work and how to get there? - How to Get Homeless People in Motion
Institutionalisation

• Loss of sense of responsiblity
• Neglect of personal hygiene
• Increased passivity
• Dependance
• Process of shelterisation risks to be
    continued in homeless sector
Domestic violence

• Health effects
• Sense of loss
• Negative self image
• No supportive networks
• Personality traits and social skills
• Are extra barriers to employment
Helping people to overcome barriers

• Too less attention for day activities,
  training and learning causes
  shelterization
• We need to know how do people learn
and wich competences are needed in
  daily life
How do people learn ?

• Formal learning
• Informal learning
• Experience based learning : most
  important !
Homeless people in motion … a
       client first approach
• Collaboration with educational and job
  centres
• An own service policy about daily
  activities
• Attention for child care
• House rules must encourage day
  activities
• Use media, participation in local cultural
  life and sports
When is a person ready for work and how to get there? - How to Get Homeless People in Motion
Apply process models of behavioural
              changes
• Cfr. Model of Prochaska&Diclemente
• Don’t push forward your own solutions
• Arguing is rarely effective
The question is not a housing first or
an employment first approach, but a
client first approach, by helping the
client to reach the goals for wich he
            is motivated for.
Some examples

• In the homeless services
• Centres for labour care
When is a person ready for work and how to get there? - How to Get Homeless People in Motion
Succes factors ?

• Positive : higher employment rate,
  possitive effects on (family)
relationships, more chance to stable job
• Critical sounds : after several years
more risks on homelessness, but for the
weakest it is the last chance
• New social question !
