40%  of Hispanic students are ELLs 90%  of Hispanics under 18 are U.S. born
Between 1995 and 2005… These states experienced more than  200%  growth in the number of ELLs: AL, AR, CO, DE, GA,  IN, KY, NE, NH, NC,  SC, TN, VA
41  states have programs that foster bilingual literacy

HISTORY Opened in August of 1995 Dual Language Immersion Program Multi-age classrooms for Kindergarten through third grade Reached its goal of having grades K-8 in the year 2000 Currently the school serves a total of 750 students

OBJECTIVES OF TWO-WAY DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS To develop a high level of proficiency in both languages To develop positive attitudes  To prepare students to perform at or above grade levels To instill self-esteem and strong leadership skills
Language of Instruction Grade Spanish English K - 2 Reading/Language Arts, Math, and  Social Studies Science 3 - 4 Reading/Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies Science and Reading 5 - 6 Reading/ Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies Reading/ Language Arts and Science 7 - 8 Pre AP & AP Spanish Reading /Language Arts, Math, Social Studies,  and Science
 
Interested parents must attend a mandatory orientation session and complete an application of interest Applications are entered in a software program 88 numbers are then randomly selected  and assigned to four  Kindergarten classes STUDENT SELECTION
If there are available slots, students from grades 1-7 are selected and assessed Students must score 85% or higher in the assessments in order to be admitted A waiting list is maintained at every grade level STUDENT SELECTION
Parents are required to sign an agreement Commitment of  five years The agreement also includes student, teacher, parent, and administrator  responsibilities PARENTAL AGREEMENT
Chinese, German, Japanese, and  Russian Teacher developed scope and sequence K-4  30 minutes daily 5-8  45 minutes on alternating days THIRD LANGUAGE INTRUCTION
 
TRAVEL Trips alternate every two years  China & Germany / Russia & Japan Students are selected through an application process and a  selection committee Parents are provided with fundraising and payment plan opportunities FESTIVALS Students from each language participate in a K – 8 festival on alternating years Festival activities include  songs, poems, dances, and role playing using their third language THIRD LANGUAGE
School starts in early August Third Language Trips take place during the December and March Intersession Intervention classes are offered during the December and March Intersession
Kindergarten -  6 th 30 minutes on alternating days Cultural Activities  include : Kung Fu (Chinese) Gymnastics (German) Karate (Japanese) Tennis (Russian) CULTURAL ACTIVITIES  & PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Music appreciation classes are offered for students in  Kindergarten  through 4 th   grade Band, Orchestra,  and Folklorico classes are offered to students in 5 th  through 8 th   FINE ARTS PROGRAM
A chievement  V ia  I ndividual  D etermination  The focus of the  AVID   Program includes : Organizational Skills Study Skills Note taking Strategies 4.  Instructional Strategies Pilot  program for all students in grades  4 th  – 8 th Training was provided to administrators  and grade level representatives
ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTING All  7 th  grade students are enrolled in a  Pre-AP Spanish class 8 th  graders  advance to an AP Spanish class 100 %  of 8 th  grade students  take  the AP-Spanish Exam During the 2007-2008 school year  85 % of our 8 th  graders received college credit
