Preparing for the 10 th Grade Writing Test
Writing the Introduction
What is an introduction? Just like when you introduce yourself to someone who you do not know, the introduction of an essay introduces the reader to your topic and your ideas.
The Introduction is like an upside down triangle. Just like a triangle the long flat line is a BASE. It is what we build the whole essay on! Base
We get the base from the prompt or the question. For example, in Part 1 of the Prompt may say: Write a letter explaining the meaning of responsibility as it relates to the high school experience . This letter will be included in a high school orientation booklet. You may use the following information, your own experiences, observations, and/or readings. Using that, I might create my base with their ideas. I might say something like: There are many meanings of responsibility . This is true even as it relates to the high school experience . Do you see where I took most of my big ideas right out of the prompt. I just added a few words to make it sound good.
To whom it may concern, There are many meanings of responsibility . This is true even as it relates to the high school experience . Base Do you see where I got my opening sentence? Do you see how that is very general. Now I need to build to the specific.
The Introduction is like an upside down triangle. Just like a triangle, The base builds or narrows down to the point. There is a lot of room between the base and the point. We must fill that up with our ideas. Body of the Introduction
Let ’s brainstorm some ways that students might be responsible. Studying Behaving Working Can you think of some other ideas. Let ’s pick two of these to write about!
To whom it may concern, There are many meanings of responsibility . This is true even as it relates to the high school experience . Students can be responsible by working hard and studying. They can also make sure they behave properly at school.
Is this a little easier than you thought?
The Introduction is like an upside down triangle. Just like a triangle there must be a POINT. It is the POINT of the whole essay! Point….. This may be called the thesis
To whom it may concern, There are many meanings of responsibility . This is true even as it relates to the high school experience . Point Do you see where I got my opening sentence? Do you see how that is very general. Now I need to build to the specific.
