- 1. Adjusting images Welcome to Corel PHOTO-PAINT®, a powerful bitmap image-editing application that lets you retouch existing photos or create original graphics. In this tutorial, you will use the Image Adjustment Lab to make the colors in a photograph more vibrant while also bringing out more detail and adding contrast. Some of these changes are subtle, but the final result is a high-quality photograph that a professional photographer might produce. You will also use the Image Adjustment Lab to create various photographic effects in an image. What you will learn In this tutorial, you will learn how to • use the Image Adjustment Lab • adjust the color and contrast of images • create photographic effects Opening the Image Adjustment Lab First, you will open the Image Adjustment Lab, and set up the window so you can easily preview the changes you make. 1 Click File menu Open. 2 Choose the folder where Corel PHOTO-PAINT is installed. 3 Choose the folder Program filesCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite 13 LanguagesENTutorialsSample files. 4 Double-click the filename flower.tif. 5 Click Adjust menu Image adjustment lab. 6 Click the Maximize button at the upper-right corner of the window. 7 Click the Before and after full preview button at the top of the window. 8 Click the Zoom to fit button . Adjusting the color The picture below was taken outside in the daylight, which gives it a naturally “warm” lighting. First, you will “cool” the highlights by adjusting the Temperature setting. Then, you will adjust the tint, saturation, midtones, and highlights to achieve the final effect. Page 1 of 7 Corel PHOTO-PAINT tutorial
- 2. Tutorial: Adjusting images The Hints area in the Image Adjustment Lab gives you more information about the current tool or control you are using. As you work, click the Create snapshot button after each step to see your progress and compare changes. 1 In the Image Adjustment Lab, move the Temperature slider to 6202. 2 Cooling the temperature has caused the green leaves to become slightly blueish. To restore the warm color, move the Tint slider to 24. The Tint slider adjusts the Green/Magenta balance. When you increase the value, you add more green to the image. - 3. Tutorial: Adjusting images 3 Adding green to the picture has caused the colored petals to become slightly greyish. To fix this, move the Saturation slider to 57. 4 To bring out more detail in the image, move the Midtones slider to 36. Unlike the Brightness and Contrast controls, which adjust the overall image, the Highlight, Shadow, and Midtone controls target specific areas of the image. Page 3 of 7 Corel PHOTO-PAINT tutorial
- 4. Tutorial: Adjusting images 5 Brightening the midtones has caused some of the highlights to look “blown out.” Move the Highlights slider to -17 to compensate. 6 To increase the overall contrast, move the Shadows slider to -10. Page 4 of 7 Corel PHOTO-PAINT tutorial

The colors are now more vibrant, without losing their tone or becoming oversaturated, and there is more contrast to make the details “pop.” Creating photographic effects You can also use the Image Adjustment Lab to create photographic effects. Below are some effects and their settings. When you are trying different settings, remember to start with the original flower.tif file each time—after taking a snapshot of the result, click the Reset to original button. To simulate a hand-tinted photo • Decrease the Saturation value. (A value of -51 is used in the example below.) Page 5 of 7 Corel PHOTO-PAINT tutorial
- 6. Tutorial: Adjusting images To posterize the image • Increase both the Brightness and Contrast values. (A value of 65 is used in the example below.) To simulate different lighting conditions • Adjust different controls. The image below simulates a night shot with a strong flash. The effect is achieved by using these settings: • Saturation: -30 • Highlights: 100 • Shadows: -80 • Midtones: -37 Page 6 of 7 Corel PHOTO-PAINT tutorial
