Motivating Students to Achieve
Phil Grey
Motivational Quote
 “Knowing is not enough; we
must apply. Willing is not
enough, we must do”
 Wolfgang Von Goethe
The process of motivation stems from
stimulation , which in turn is followed by an
emotional reaction that leads to a specific
behavioral response.
Desirable – reward
Undesirable – negativity
Motivational Influences
Motivation
Teacher skills in motivating
learners should be a key element
of their job.
Influences on Motivation
Family
Socio Culture
Peer groups
Teacher
Chinese Proverb
“When I walk with two others , they
may serve as my teacher”
Peer Influences
Primary Socialisation – Family
role models
Family breakdown can have a
severe effect on motivation
Learners motivation
Learners can motivate each other or
demotivate subconsciously
Friendly competition
Cooperation and Team work
Bad qualities / habits
Self Motivation
Generally leaners will show self
motivation if:
They know what is expected of them
Think it’s worthwhile
Feel they will benefit
Nearly NEET!
How would you motivate/re-engage a
learner who has switched off and is at
risk of dropping out ?
Watch what you say
Be aware of verbal comments and
non-verbal body language and the
effect it has on motivation.
Learners collect feedback and store it
for years.
Things to do
Honest Appreciation
 I appreciate that
 I like that idea
 Thank you for that, Nicki
 Well done you
Communicate Empathetic
Acceptance or Understanding
 Sometimes learners will give
incorrect answers. Respond without
discouraging them
 “I might make that mistake”
 “Lots of us feel that way”
 “I can see why you would say that”
 “I can see how you would do that”
Attention Without Praise
Support the learner without them
growing dependant on your praise
Sincere eye contact
Listen, show you're listening
Pay attention
Thumbs up, nod, shake a hand
Smile if appropriate
Use plain correct or Incorrect
“Yes that’s right”
“OK”
“Yes that’s just what I wanted”
“Correct”
“Yes, thank you, Tyler”
“No, the correct answer is ******”
“You had the first part right”
Provide Praise and Reward for All
 Teachers must be fair when
distributing praise
 Individual and group Praise
 Look for positives even when
pointing out mistakes
Encourage team unity and bonding
Be Cautious
Too much praise
Unfairness
Manipulation
“Look, Sam can do it - why can’t you?”
“I like the way this side of the room is
contributing”
Exaggeration
This can quickly devalue the
relationship with your learners if
used repetitively.
“Amazing ”
“Wonderful”
“Sensational”
“Great Answer”
Learner Motivation
Learners should :
Focus on the value of learning
Be helped to set short-term/long-
term goals
Persevere if things go wrong
Be encouraged not to blame
themselves for lack of ability
Ways to motivate your learners
Praise in ways big and small
Expect the best
Spread excitement
Mix it up
Assign roles in the group and
encourage responsibility
Hand over some control
Ways to motivate your learners
Be open to their suggestions
Relate to their lives
Track improvement not just academic
Reward positive behaviour outside
your session
Plan trips and get them involved
Ways to motivate your learners
 Be supportive
 Make it real
 Provide choices
 Balance the challenge
 Use peer role models
 Establish a sense of belonging
 Strategize with strugglers
Naikan Self Reflection
 What have I received from other
people?
 What have I given to other people?
 What troubles have I caused for
other people?
Positive Motivation
 Tell them you know they can do it
 Tell them you believe in them
 Tell them you want them to succeed
C.S Lewis
 “Believe in yourself and all that you
are. Know that there is something
inside you that is greater than any
obstacle.”
