¡Welcome to the May edition of Energy Panorama!

We began the month in Madrid where we co-hosted, together with our partner IPD Latin America, the 6th annual Madrid Energy Conference: Where Europe and the Americas Meet for Energy Dialogue.

We are grateful to the speakers, sponsors, attendees and contributors who made MEC25 a success. Your commitment, insights, and presence are what make the Madrid Energy Conference not only possible, but dynamic and powerful. We are already looking forward to MEC26.

The evolving legal and regulatory framework for Mexico’s energy sector are at the center of the event we are organizing on June 5 in Mexico City. Our panels and discussion will provide deeper understanding for the power sector going forward, as well as the crucial role for natural gas and the country’s dependency on natural gas supplies from the US.

Further assessing the role for the private sector and how it can support the massive needs for the energy sector within the new framework are at the core of the discussions. Indeed, we are pleased to convene public-private dialogue pertaining to these key areas for Mexico’s economic competitiveness and continue to serve as an honest broker of high-level discourse.

Opinion & Analysis

• Carlos Garibaldi, Executive Secretary of Arpel and an IOA Non-Resident Fellow, published a robust assessment of the dialogue around energy transition and decarbonization as related to the oil and gas sector. His analysis provides a unique lens to view and further understand the intersection of energy security and climate action. His “religiosity metaphor” and classification is worth further reflection.  
• Our Non-Resident Fellow, Leonardo Beltran, shared reflections from his participation at the Global Wind Energy Council event in the UK earlier this month focused on the geopolitics of the energy transition. He set forth the potential for Mexico to be a strategic leader in the energy transition.  
• At the end of the month, Cecilia Aguillon participated in a panel discussion on the recent electricity blackouts in Latin America and Spain, and the energy transition. The panel was moderated by former CNN reporter Claudia Palacios and will be published in her YouTube Channel Periodismo Puro y Sin Apuro.  
• Jeremy Martin was quoted in the Hispano Post about Venezuela sanctions and the head spinning “foreign policy by Tweet” emanating from Washington, DC. He also spoke to Energy Pioneer about the evolving investment framework for clean tech with the arrival of the Trump administration.  
• Jeremy Martin, Richard Kiy and Leonardo Beltran spoke to Mexico News Daily in advance of our June 5 Roundtable in Mexico City and shared insights on the top 3 challenges facing Mexico’s energy sector.  
• This month also included two virtual brainstorming sessions with our roster of Non-Resident Fellows focused on the themes and draft agenda for this year’s XXXIV La Jolla Energy Conference on October 21-23. Stay tuned for the launch in June of the draft thematic agenda!
