For Building Associations
Helpful Tips to starting your building association
Tip #1: Define building and
neighbor priorities
This is the most important thing to establish
even before the creation of a TA.
Tip #2: Establish Clear
Communication Channel
From the beginning, set up a smooth and steady line of communication
from the association to the tenants and back. You can set up a mycoop
discussion and invite neighbors to participate. All of your files can be
uploaded on myccop, accessible to all who sign up.
Tip #3: Be Inclusive
Inform your neihgbors that a discsussion has been created and invite
everyone to join. Everyone won’t join at first and that’s okay, extending the
option is what matters. Use mycoop.com invitations if you have everyone’s
email adress or ask us for our building kit, containing welcome fliers and
fun facts.
Tip #4: Make Sure You Have
The Facts
Connect with knowledgeable advisers, and
be selective about what internet sources
you quote and pass on to tenants.
Depending on the problems you are facing,
consider getting advice from engineers,
lawyers, elected officials, architects.
Invite experts to meetings. You can't have all
the answers but you can bring in someone
who does.
You can also check our blog to find common
issues and areas of miscommunication.
Lack of information and facts can doom your
association.
Tip #5: Stick to the mission
Write a mission down and blow it up to
poster size to post at every meeting.
When the meeting strays point to the
mission to keep everyone focused.
Tip #6: Keep agendas specific
Never have a meeting without an agenda. Democracy can
get unruly.
Tip #7: Try To Have Fun
Always leave time in a meeting to have
refreshments and shmooze. Don't just meet
when there's a problem – building a sense
of community when things are going well,
will pay off when the inevitable crisis comes
along.
Tip #8: Connect with elected officials
To find out who represents you on the city council, or state assembly.
These posts were created to help residents and these individuals can
be your allies.
Tip #9: Celebrate Victories and be
generous with your “thank yous."
Everyone wants to be appreciated so be
liberal with your public thank yous— It will
encourage more people to join the effort,
and the broadest possible participation is
what a building association is all about.
