Ideate: Run brainstorms to
empower creativity, both on your
own and with a team
ARIBA JAHAN
Director of Innovation, Ad Council

@aribajahan
Today’s intentions
Be present, physically and mentally.
Be curious and open.
Listen. deeply.
One conversation at a time.
Create room for others.
Focus on learning.
Devices away.
@aribajahan
Why
To have more productive and creative ideations with our teams
To allow ourselves & others to do the “outside of the box” thinking
How to run an ideation
To come up with some ideas on writing or speaking projects!
Why
@aribajahan
You are familiar with some ideation methods & how they work
Better understanding of the conditions needed for ideations to be
productive
Better understanding of how to prep & run an ideation
Feel more equipped to work on designing one
Leave with some ideas on what to write or speak on!
By the end of today
@aribajahan
Role of the facilitator during an
ideation session
How to prep for and how to run an
ideation
How to be inclusive of all voices,
including remote
How to create a space where
creative ideation can thrive
Practice ideation methods and go
over what they’re good for
Generate ideas!
Run a brainstorm Come up with ideas
@aribajahan
What is ideation?
What is ideation?
The generation of many idea options to address a well defined
problem space or area of focus.
Ideas can be practical and simple or wild and crazy.

Who’s been to a bad brainstorm?
What was it like?

When do you come up with your best ideas?

@aribajahan
Three key facts about our ability to brainstorm
We need alpha waves to get us in the zone, help people get in the zone
during that carved out time.
Our first 10 ideas are not that out of the box, help people get divergent
using different activities to push their thinking.
We're not raised/rewarded to think outside of the box (unless it goes
perfectly well) or for “try it, give it a shot”, so create safety to be curious
and wacky.
@aribajahan
Keep it with you after the workshop. Write ideas, doodle,
diagram…
It’s hard to tell a good idea from a bad idea at first glance, so write
it down
Braindump Notebook

Inside organization/ group
● Vision/mission/ strategic objectives / all staffs
● Product
● User feedback (+/-)
● Discussions with co-workers, especially those in different job
functions & perspectives
Ideation Input
@aribajahan
Outside organization/ group
• News, conferences, twitter, competitors/partners
• Trends, cultural movements, new technologies
• User needs -
current users, unmet needs
Not current users, what are we not thinking of?
• But use caution: avoid looking for “best practices” because
YMMV
Ideation Input
@aribajahan
• Recent projects, tasks & curiosities
• Recent rabbit holes & frustrations
• Learned something new & applied it?
• Talks you attended - inspired & did a thing
• A current dialogue you have a POV on
• New skill you flexed
Mining for inspiration

Each team member solo sketches
eight different ideas on 8 index
cards/paper before sharing with
the group.

Alternate Worlds

company in a different industry
approach this problem?
Macgyver?
Tech ethicist?
Starbucks?
Cirque du Soleil?
[company you like for their
approach/product/values]
@aribajahan
Round Robin
People add on to the ideas of
others.
Person creates a detailed
description/ sketch of idea on
paper and then passes it along.
Each next person evolves this idea
by: eliminating something, adding
something, or adding questions
for consideration.
@aribajahan
Paper on the Table
Visualize desired outcome &
experience, then map back what
needs to be explored, prototyped,
& tested.
Lay out a paper on the table wide
enough for multiple people to
sketch on it. On selected idea,
everyone draws/ writes -
someone’s journey, emotions, best
case scenario.

Question
@aribajahan
Each column can be one thing.
● A project you want to talk about
● A project you are really proud of
● Topic you’re interested in and know about now
● Topic you’d like to know more about in the future
Something you’re inspired by
● Talk/podcast heard
● Article/ book read

@aribajahan
Each row is one question:
1. Your unique spin/ angle / POV
2. What was a challenge you had to tackle? How did you tackle? What
can you share that can help them tackle it too?
3. What’s something you wish you knew beforehand?
What’s something you wish others knew about this? Why?
4. What’s something you wish you could know more about? Any
questions you wish you knew the answer to?

Idea Selection
This is NOT idea selection
@aribajahan
This is NOT idea selection
@aribajahan
● Voting on ideas = narrowing in on which ideas to explore further,
found interesting
● Voting on idea ≠ idea to launch
● So voting at this stage should be based on:
Which idea has the most potential for impact?
Which idea best addresses the challenge statement?
Idea selection
@aribajahan
Voting Methods
@aribajahan
Ideation session : gut check
Did I generate a wide enough range of ideas?
Was I able to settle on one (or a few) ideas to explore in more detail?
Are the ideas concrete enough to prototype and test with the audience?
Are there constraints that need to be considered for further rounds of
ideation?
Who else should be looped in for expertise? Stake in the ground?
@aribajahan
What do we need in order to run a brainstorm?
What is this for?
Clearly defined problem space & goal of session
Gather: user insights & opportunities
Challenge statement prompts (1-3)
Any constraints to be mindful of?
Deadlines, budget, decision makers
Understanding of unspoken norms and decision
makers
@aribajahan
Well defined challenge statement
● Should provide:
○ What’s the problem to solve / action
○ Who is it in service to
○ What’s the impact you want to have
● Not too narrow (feels like there’s one solution)
● Not too broad ( you have no idea where to begin)
● 2-3 is better than combining it all in one
● Just adding a “HMW” ≠ a challenge statement.
@aribajahan
Prep
Who is facilitating?
Who is taking notes?
Intentionally inviting people - diversity of thoughts
Max 10 people (2-3 groups)
Time allotment (45 min - 90 min)
- 20 min - framing up challenge
- 5 min - warm up
- 20 - 45 min- brainstorming - co - creating
- 20 min- sharing to larger group
- 5 min- close out
@aribajahan
Set the stage
Share beforehand:
Goal of session (O,E,C)
Their role (be generative!)
Challenge statement
Cultivate space:
Environment (music ↓ vol, no devices)
Space (wall space, moveable tables)
Supplies (stickies, sharpies, dots, snacks)
@aribajahan
How can you apply this in your work
and life?
Inclusive of Remote
● Define their space & tools: sticky, sites, docs, pen, camera
● Use existing tools: Slack, Gdoc, Ringcentral/Zoom (breakout room)
● If possible, pre-pair remote participants so they know who their partner is
● Use warm ups that they can engage in.
If 1 person remote:
Camera on
Ideas on stickies > mail OR typed
If simple, vote in session
Create remote voting mechanism
If more than 1 person:
Camera on
Everyone’s ideas on a virtual space
If possible, vote in tool
Create remote voting mechanism
