FEEL

Every year as a new academic year begins in June along with the onset of
monsoon, many students from the slums of Malwani, Malad (W), Mumbai are
unable to attend regular school due to sickness, caused by unhealthy and
unhygienic surroundings prevailing in and around their residence.

The problem magnifies many fold due to civic apathy, over population and lack of
awareness among the general public about basic health and hygiene.

Clogged drains, overflowing garbage bins, stagnant waters leads to favourable
conditions for pathogens causing monsoon related sicknesses like malaria,
typhoid, jaundice, etc.

                                   IMAGINE

The students of Holy Mother English School, unfortunately happen to be living in
the same above specified area going through all the ill effects of living in such
unhealthy surroundings.

They thought of doing their small bit in addressing these problems by discussing
the various issues with their teachers and the management.

The students felt first and foremost the general public lacks awareness about
health and hygiene and are forced to take reactionary measures once their
children are affected by the above specified illness.

The students along with the teachers then sat down pin pointing various simple
things that needs to be spoken to the public and they decided to conduct health
awareness camps in the slums of Malwani by making very expressive placards
giving vital information about the various sickness and all the preventive
measures to be adopted at home on a regular basis
DO

Students did the following things :

   • Students collected the information regarding basic health and hygiene
from various sources like, textbooks, library books, newspapers, internet,
       etc.
   • With the help of teachers they decided the basic theme of the project – “A
HEALTHY NATION IS A WEALTHY NATION”
   • A very appropriate and informative style was decided for conveying their
       messages through the placards.
   • Each placard informs about one health related issue in the form of picture
       and factual data.
   • Nine such placards were designed each covering the following title
           a) Cleanliness (a hindi poem on cleanliness)
           b) Mosquito (a hindi poem on mosquito menace)
           c) Malaria (symptoms and treatment)
           d) Typhoid (symptoms and treatment)
           e) Care of Teeth
           f) Care of Nails
           g) Boil Water
           h) Wash Hands
           i) Exercise
(Photos of each placard is attached)
   • Two health awareness camps were organized – one at the open ground
adjacent to the school premises, where about 100 school parents were
present. Other in the midst of the slum colony where about 70 – 80 people
were present who wholeheartedly supported the children’s initiative and
efforts and co-operated by distributing handouts to the people in the entire
       neighbourhood.
   • Each child was designated one simple task of explaining to the people,
one health related issue with the help of placards, poetry, factual
       messages, etc.
   • The teachers initiated the public meeting by briefing the public about the
importance of prevention as well as treatments of diseases.
IMPACT
   • The fifteen students who participated in the programme now have a totally
different outlook towards health and hygiene not only in their appearances
but also in their behavior and mannerisms. They are surely and steadily
passing on their own positive experiences of being involved in such a
health related project to their school friends, as well as other children in
     their neighborhood.
