Geographical Location : The Village Gilakaur is situated in a remote area nearly 130kms away from Jodhpur District. It is situated in the midst of sand dunes & 30 kms. inside from NH 114 Jodhpur-Jaisalmer Highway. Cultural Background : - There isRajput, Bishnoi, Meghwal, Prajapat & Suthar etc. castes in Gilakaur. Dominating caste is Meghwal. Main resources of livelihood are farming & animal husbandry. Only 40 % community is literate. Orthodox families having strong belief in traditions & customs. Role of Satya Bharti School in the Village : The school has worked as changing in attitude towards education especially for girl child. We organizes PTMs & community development campaigns in which we not only discuss on the development of students but also generate awareness about education, health & hygiene, environmental awareness & other social burning issues etc. Participation in ‘Design for Giving’ School Contest : This contest has provided us a platform that from a small village we can share our efforts which is creating awareness in community nearby & provided us an opportunity to show our efforts. About the Community
In assembly & in our classes we are told about the importance of hygiene that how it keeps us fit & healthy always stroked us. But even after that there were some parents or the families on the way whom we see that they live in quiet unhygienic manner. We ‘Felt’: We saw that even the elder one especially women don’t bath for two three days. Their kids playing all the time in the mud, pus flowing from ears & boils & the flies buzzing on their abscesses. This all made us to think that can run a campaign regarding the difference between living hygienically & unhygienic by providing the examples people live there.
Disease free & healthy community Students won’t miss due schools due to sickness Community will understand the importance of cleanliness Creating awareness especially among women who themselves wont keep them clean or their surroundings We ‘Imagined’:
We create some posters & charts showing some ill effects of unhygienic surroundings & people. We ‘Did’: We organized street plays, rallies & also contributed in cleaning the water tanks & other areas with the help of our teachers.
The most important thing we did was that we made door to door visits went inside the houses observed & suggested how to maintain hygiene. Even though it was little challenging but we convinced them & held meetings separately at every house as community is unable to gather due to busy with their farming works. We ‘Did’:
Through this campaign with the help of teachers we come to know about the importance of maintaining hygiene. In some of the houses there were instant impact & where they prepare food was also unclean that they first cleaned it & then prepared food. Even when some of the houses women cleaned their houses because that students are coming regarding cleanliness as told by some women. We were feeling proud & also praised & thanked them for taking initiative on there own. While we cleaning some areas where water collects our teachers also joined us. Impact on Us, Teachers & Community:
Hanuman Singh Head Teacher – “It was really great time & also quiet challenging that we entered in the houses of community & found th cleanliness & telling them how to stay clean especially females weren’t ready to accept it they said this all disease are due to weather & happens to all at that time kids faced them well present themselves as an examples explaining with the help of charts which really touched their heart & impact can be seen in previous pictures.” Deepi Devi (Villager) – “I have never thought about the cleanliness so deeply that living unhygienic ally can make us such seriously sick. Thanks to little kids that they have generated awareness among us through various plays & slogans.” Experience of Community Members & Teachers:
Wherever we go we can see the garbage lying side the roads & even people can be seen very dirty & spreading dust every where that’s why we thought that cleanliness must start from individual life & if one will keep oneself clean, one will keep the surroundings clean, through surroundings it will spread to villages then to cities to country 7 to whole world. So going ahead we will ask people to stay clean at village level & then wherever we will have chance to spread this message we will spread it. We will keep visiting the houses where the situations are very critical & share the experiences of those people who are in practice of staying & maintaining cleanliness. The Road Ahead….. (in the next 3 months)
