UNDERSTANDING
RESEARCH
OBJECTIVES
At the end of our lesson, you would be able to:
1. Define research and its characteristics
2. Experience the most basic process of research
through a graphic organizer
3. Differentiate qualitative and quantitative
research
4. Provide examples of possible research topics in
different areas of interest
Read the following statements. Put a SMILEY on the space
before the number if you think that the statement is a
description of research. Put a FROWN mark if you think it is
not.
 1. Research must solve a problem encountered by people
daily.
 2. To be able to conduct a research, books, magazines,
and internet alone are enough.
 3. Research must follow a step by step process.
 4. The steps in conducting a research has a pattern.
 5. Any concern or issue encountered by a student is
researchable.
What is your
idea about the
word
“RESEARCH”?

More Definitions of Research
Is the process of solving problems
and finding facts in an organized
way…RESEARCH is done by applying
what is known and building on it.
Additional knowledge can be
discovered by proving existing
theories, and by trying to better
explain observations.
More Definitions of RESEARCH
The systematic
investigation into and study
of materials and sources in
order to establish facts and
reach new conclusions.
More Definitions of RESEARCH
It is a careful and detailed study
into a specific problem, concern
or issue using the scientific
method. This is best
accomplished by turning the
issue into a question, with the
intent of the research to answer
the question.
What are the Characteristics of
Research?
Empirical Research is based on pieces of
evidence and supplementary
details that are factual or
theoretical
Systematic It follows a step by step process
and procedures to come up with
an analysis and a conclusion.
What are the Characteristics of
Research?
Objective It is unbiased. It looks at all sides of
the situations and circumstances. It
does not settle on speculations and
assumptions, but on factual and
truthful sources.
Original Work It must be free from plagiarism. Citing
of sources and relevant information is
vital in the creation of a sound and
original work.
What is the Process of Research?
 1. DEFINE RESEARCH PROBLEM
 2. REVIEW THE LITERATURE
 3. FORMULATE HYPHOTHESIS
 4. DESIGN RESEARCH
 5. COLLECT DATA
 6. ANALYZE DATA
 7. INTERPRET AND REPORT
EXPERIENCE IT: To experience the process of research, fill
out this chart by sharing ONE research topic interest and the
possible way/s to know more about it.
