How did you use new media
technologies in the construction and
research, planning & evaluation stages?
The internet was one of the major ways we used media
technologies to our advantage in the research and
planning stages of our coursework. We used the
internet to watch various types of adverts, in class and
at home, on YouTube. This was done to help us
generate the generic conventions of adverts and
develop ideas for our own one. From this, we created
storyboards to help us visualise the concept of our
designed adverts. This helped us to go to the location
of where we were going to film and know exactly what
we were going to shoot on location with ease, with the
different types of shots, angles etc.

The small and portable DV cameras were used for
shooting all of our adverts. These were useful because
they were very easy to carry around and not large at
all, meaning we could carry the camera around from
location to location without any hassle. In addition, the
cameras could easily transfer the video files to the
Macs using a simple USB cable. This was a great
advantage as we could quickly readjust a shot and then
upload it to the Macs within a few minutes.
However, the camera’s batteries ran out very fast, so it
was quite inconvenient as we had to bring a charger
home and recharge the camera every time before we
went out to film.

Using iMovie on the Macs for editing was useful
because there was a clean and easy interface which
was very easy to use, dragging and dropping the video
clips into the timeline. It was also useful because you
could preview the resulting video, while applying
effects, in real time, not having to wait for any
rendering. In addition, with iMovie, extracting the
audio from the camera’s video clips for the radio advert
was done with complete ease. However, iMovie was
limited to the fact that we could not layer a picture of
our Rhino energy drink logo onto the actual video clip.
