- #11: Another type of metadata that has potential in the future is technically generated metadata. Text mining and algorithms can do a lot of the work. For instance, entity extraction can pick out proper names and key topics in news articles. Here is an example of top themes for a day from Google news. An algorithm picked this list and displayed them as “hot items” for the day. If you click one you then get all the news stories with mentions of those entities. This kind of metadata scales up quickly and once the algorithm is in place can be inexpensive to run. But isn’t easy to do and it might be inaccurate .As you can see from the results here, this is a mixed bag of things. Now that becomes another piece of metadata that we can use to search and sort on.
