Abstract
Existing conventional modes
of transportation tends to be
either relatively slow or
expensive.
Hyperloop seeks to change
this paradigm by being both
fast and inexpensive mode
of transportation for people…
4
Background
● Hyperloop concept was invented and
designed in 1812 by the British Mechanical
Engineer George Wenger .
● The concept was developed and
redesigned by the CEO of SpaceX, Paypal &
Tesla, Elon Musk in 2012 .In his words…
5
“It is the fifth mode of
transport
(roadways,railways,wate
rways & airways),it’s
fastest and most
efficient, I have a name
for it. It’s called the
HYPERLOOP…
6
contd;
Later Elon opensourced the
concept as a competition.
Several groups and companies
have takeon the project. Some
of them are hyperloop one,
spaceX, MIT & BITS hyperloop.
7
What is
Hyperloop
You may have seen a
tube carrying a pod like
object in some sci-fi
movie like Black panther,
Kingsman or in some
James Bond movie….
8
Contd;
The Hyperloop is a concept for high speed ground
transportation, consisting of passenger pods
traveling at transonic speeds in a partially
evacuated tube. A system that promises to travel
at twice the speed of a commercial aircraft, and
can travel upto a speed around 1220 km/hr...
9
Contd;
…transporting passengers
from Los Angeles to San
Francisco in just 30 mins
or in our case it’s
equivalent to travel from
kathgodam to Dehradun
in around 15 mins...
10
Components
There are three basic components in
hyperloop transportation system namely:
1. Capsule/Pod
2. Tube
3. Propulsion
11
Capsule
The capsule can carry 28
passengers at a time and
it send at a very high
speed and it is levitated
by a high pressure air
cushion. The design of
capsule starts with the
aerodynamic shape.
12
Tube
The tube is made of steel
and is supported by
pillars. There is a solar
arrays are provided on a
top of the tubes for
providing power to the
system.
13
Propulsion
To accelerate and decelerate
the capsule, a linear induction
Motor is used in the hyperloop
System. The moving motor element (rotor) will be located
on the capsule for weight and power requirements while
the tube will incorporate the stationary motor element
(stator) which powers the capsule.
14
Working Principle
Working of hyperloop system is based on the
magnetic levitation. The capsule which acts as a
rotor ,levitates inside the tube (acting as a stator).
Nearly all of the air inside the hyperloop tube is
removed using a series of vacuum pumps. This
effectively creats our own sky inside the tube, as if
we are flying at 200,000 feet above the sea level….
15
Contd;
…An air compressor fan
is fitted on front side of
the capsule (pod) which
transfers high pressure
air from front side to the
rear side of capsule and it
propels…
16
Contd;
It creates an air cushion, so
that pod can be suspen-
ded in air within the tube.
It also prevents the pod from crashing to some other
pod. A linear induction motor can send the pod from
one place to another place to a subsonic velocity that
is just lesser than the speed of sound.
17
Contd;
The pod will be self-powered. There is solar panel
fitted on top of the tube. By this solar panel there is
enough energy stored in battery packs to operate at
night and in cloudy weather. The energy is also
stored in the form of compressed air.
Now the following video describes whatever we
need to understand about the working of hyperloop…
18
Contd;
19
Why Hyperloop
Some points clearly showing the dominance of
hyperloop over high speed trains are:
● It’s faster, as in two to three times faster than
the fastest high-speed rail.
● It’s on-demand and direct, Trains follow a
schedule and typically have multiple stops.
Hyperloop leaves when you’re ready to go, and
pods can depart up to several times per…
20
Contd;
…minute and can transport passengers and cargo
direct to their destination with no stops along the
way.
● It’s extremely energy efficient due to solar power
utilization. In fact the hyperloop can generate
more power than it consumes as a closed system.
So technically it acts as a power generator.
● It’s less expensive and different technology.
21
22
Possible Problems
● Turning will be critical: Due to such a high speed,
the Hyperloop can only travel in a straight line.
● Correct land usage: Since the ability to travel along
only the straight path,Hyperloop have to cross all
manner of public and private lands.
● Small capsule spaces: Due to smaller pod size, the
passengers have to compromise with the comfort…
23
Contd;
● Experience could be frightening:
because the passengers would
be in a narrow sealed windowless
capsule inside a sealed tunnel. The acceleration
and the noisy vibration can cause motion sickness.
● Exposed to terrorism: Shooting few holes in the
tube would create air pockets causing a carsh…
24
Hyperloop in India
Hyperloop one group led by Richard Branson has
signed an intent agreement with Maharashtra
Government to build a hyperloop transportation
system between Mumbai and Pune, supporting 150
million passenger trips annually, and saving more
than 90 million hours of travel time.
If everything goes well, India could be the first
country to get Hyperloop One.
25
Conclusion
The proposed Hyperloop has many advantages as a
transportation system, yet it still remains
hypothetical. Even though there are many logistical
questions regarding how to deal with equipment
malfunctions, accidents and emergency
evacuations, If Hyperloop could succeed, there is no
doubt that it would revolutionize transportation.
Even if it fails, it would be a worthwhile exploration…
26
Contd;
…because it can give insights to future inventions
Final cost maybe higher than anticipated and
designs could also change into the future.
Hyperloop surely is fast, safe and cheap way of
transportation. With this we can surely say that we
are one step closer to the future we all desired…
