The Irish Universities Association
The Irish Universities Association is the voice of the university sector in
Ireland.
In September 2018 Ireland’s seven universities committed to a Charter
to grow and develop the university education system for this and future
generations of students.
Ireland’s Future Talent – A Charter for Irish
Universities
The Charter sets out six core commitments by universities, which will
work in partnership with government and other stakeholders, to fully
deliver.
1. Build on the quality of the student experience in a digital age.
Project Aims
• Enhance the digital attributes and educational experiences of Irish
university students
• Develop, pilot, review and roll out an ambitious staff development
programme to enhance the digital confidence, skills and
competences of those who teach in Irish universities
Project Structure
Funded through HEA Innovation & Transformation Programme 2019-
2021
Steering Group: IUA; Universities Representatives; NFETL; USI; THEA
Project Team: IUA Project Manager; resources embedded within each
university context; student associate intern.
Project Structure – UL team
Project Approach
This project aims to mainstream digital in teaching and learning
activities in Irish Universities, by addressing the professional
development of all who teach or support teaching and learning.

Digital Peer Review Assignments and
Student Produced Animated Videos
The autumn semester 2019 pilot project at the University of Limerick (UL) consisted of participating educators from the
School of Engineering and the School of Allied Health.
Educators from the School of Allied Health piloted
a new digital assessment initiative to build
learners’ digital competence.
Students taking a Therapies & Technologies
module over a 6-week academic block of study
were tasked with developing a 2-3 minute
Information Sharing Animation (ISA) on a
specified Speech and Language Therapy (SLT)
area that they chose from a list of relevant topics.
Educators from the School of Engineering piloted two different approaches to conducting
digital peer review assignments.
1 – Using the Turnitin.com website to conduct peer and self-review assignments with students.
2 – Using the built-in Turnitin assignment functionality within a tool on ULs institutionally
supported virtual learning environment (VLE), Sulis.
Why get involved?
• Opportunity for mentored staff development within the context of
enhancing digital capacity, linked to strategic goals/needs
• Opportunity to shape a professional development programme for use
across the sector
• Staff who complete the pilot programme will be awarded a micro-
credential in Digital Teaching and Learning
• Opportunity for the Discipline (School/Unit) to apply for the National
Forum Delta Award

SHOUT4HE Erasmus+
‘Sharing Open Education
Practices Using Technology
for Higher Education’
Professor Gary Beauchamp
Our rationale
Foundations for our current Erasmus+ project ‘SHaring Open educational
practices Using Technology For Higher Education’ (SHOUT4HE):
HE teaching skills are best addressed not within single university or an
individual country, but rather through transnational cooperation between HEIs
to develop best practice and innovation.
International collaboration is particularly crucial in the case of open
educational practices, which we believe are the key for university pedagogy to
keep pace with an increasing pervasive and sophisticated digital era.
Research Partnership
• There are five university partners (Bordeaux, Cardiff, Hasselt,
Limerick, Nice), in four countries (Belgium, France, Ireland, the
UK), all of whom are involved in HE teacher education.
• Each partner is working with several local HE teachers covering a
wide variety of disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical
experience with the goal of recognising, developing and sharing
innovative practice with technologies.
Cardiff Metropolitan University
• Cardiff Metropolitan University primarily
provides full-time, part-time and
flexible study for a range of learners.
• The School of Education and Social
Policy has over 80 full-time staff. In
total there are over 1600 students
making it one of the largest Schools of
Education in Wales and the UK.
• Cardiff Metropolitan University leads
this project.
University of Limerick
The University of Limerick is an independent,
internationally focused university with over 11,600
students and 1,300 staff. It is a young, energetic and
enterprising university with a proud record of innovation
in education and excellence in research and scholarship.
Its mission is to promote and advance learning and
knowledge through teaching, research and scholarship in
an environment which encourages innovation and
upholds the principles of free enquiry and expression.
Particular attention is paid to the generation of
knowledge which is relevant to the needs of Ireland's
continuing socio-economic development.
PXL University of Applied Sciences and Arts
• PXL University of Applied Sciences and
Arts is a young dynamic and vibrant
organisation; a centre of expertise for
innovation, creativity and
entrepreneurship.
• PXL offers professional bachelor
programmes in Business, Education,
Healthcare, IT, Media & Tourism, Music,
Social Work and Technology, and bachelor
and master programmes in Arts.
• The university currently has over 8,000
students across 22 different degree
programmes.
University of Nice – Sophia
Antipolis
University Cote d'Azur (UCA),
located on the French Riviera, was
founded in 2015 and groups
together the major institutions of
higher education and research of
the Nice area (France), including the
University of Nice Sophia Antipolis
(UNS).
University of Bordeaux
The University of Bordeaux offers 250 Master’s
programmes and 150 Bachelor’s programmes,
including vocational programmes, across a wide range
of disciplines in Science and Technology; Law, Political
Science, Economics and Management; Life and Health
Sciences; and Social and Human Sciences.
The University also offers national diplomas in Health
and in Oenology. There are currently 56,000 students
enrolled at the university, in undergraduate and
postgraduate studies, for over 3200 members of
teaching and research staff from more than 50
scientific disciplines.
Research Objectives
The SHOUT4HE project has three main objectives:
1. Develop a Recognition framework for effective use of
technology in Higher Education (HE) teaching.
2. Design an e-Platform for sharing open education practices
and resources.
3. Create a set of e-Resources for HE teachers.
PLUS publish research articles as a team

framework for effective use

Education (HE) teaching.

CoreHigherEducationTeachers & PeripheralHETs
• CHETs are central to the research and
include the lecturers and researchers that
are active members of the SHOUT4HE
project within the five partner universities.
• PHETs are peers and colleagues that come
from a range of disciplines and subject
areas, but all engage with the use of
technology in HE. These will be identified
and contacted throughout the duration of
the research.

The SHOUT4HE recognition framework (IO1)
• Reflective exercise to support the articulation and
dissemination of learning and teaching practices supported
with technology.
• Intended to serve as a ‘screening’ tool for HE-teaching
practices
• Simple and intuitive tool informed by the literature, and
underpinned by OEP.

Padlet
Let’s share!
In groups of 3/4, record a 30 sec min video, drawing on one aspect
from your teaching practice with technology that you would like to
share, using one of these prompts:
• I like using this tool because… (add link to the tool in your video)
• An easy tip for teaching with technology which I used before…
• What you would like to learn about other people’s practice with using
technology in order to inspire your own
• Steps:
• The group discusses the prompts and brainstorms possible contributions
(10 mins)
• The group chooses one they wish you contribute, and the person who will
appear in the video (5 min)
• Record and upload video in the Padlet
