The Prevention and Responsible Choices (PARC) program was developed in Warm Springs, Georgia to prevent head and spinal cord injuries among youth through a 4-hour program involving education, videos, interacting with injured patients, using a wheelchair, and eating with their non-dominant hand. In 1994, Drs. Thompson and Thoroughman evaluated PARC using a prospective study where PARC participants were matched with similar youth from neighboring counties who did not participate, with pretests in court and posttests 2 months later to assess the program's effectiveness.

- 1. Background • The program called Prevention and Responsible Choices (PARC) was developed by the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation in Warm Springs, Geogia. • PARC was designed to prevent head and spinal cord injuries among youth in Merriweather county and several other counties that requested to participate. • The program was designed in collaboration with the courts so that youth who came into contact with the courts for offenses which involved behaviors that could result in head and/or spinal cord injuries could be court ordered to attend the program.

Background (continued) •The program lasts about 4 hours and involves a number of activities •Education, videos, interviewing a head- or spinal cord- injured patient, being confined to a wheelchair for the duration of the program, and eating supper with the non-dominant hand •In January 1994, Drs. Nancy Thompson and Doug Thoroughman received a contract to conduct an evaluation of PARC.

Design • Prospective study • Youth seen in courts which referred to PARC were matched on gender and offense to youth seen in the courts of neighboring counties with similar % youth and geographic area • Pretest occurred in court • Posttest occurred 2 months after the PARC participant in the matched set attended PARC
