Embedding Information Literacy in a Competency-Based Curriculum
RSA Opening Minds Skills-, or co mpetency-based  approach to learning (and teaching) Citizenship (year 11) Learning (year 7) Information (year 10-11) People (year 8) Situations (year 9) All lessons have a NC learning objective and a competency-based  learning objective Competences make the learning  relevant
What did this mean for the Library? Information competency = information literacy Great opportunity to  get involved  with embedding IL across teaching and learning in the academy
How did I get involved? Volunteered to be part of the c ompetencies working party Developing how competencies will work in year 10/11 (key stage 4) Played a key role in developing the information competence framework Worked to develop a framework of success criteria that would be cross-curricular
Information Competence: Success Criteria Example learning objective:  Demonstrate your RESEARCH skills by reading and making notes on... Show that you can EVALUATE successfully by sorting and rating the source texts.
What did this achieve? Raised  awareness  of the necessity to teach and refer to  these skills Provides a  starting point  from which to engage in discussions with staff in  planning opportunities  to develop these skills Helped to  raise the profile  of the Library as a resource for  teaching  and  learning Developed the Librarian’s  status  as a member of the teaching and learning team
What did this lead to? Delivered  raising attainment  sessions for whole-year group focus days on: Revision skills Using information in relation to work experience Planned and delivered  lessons  with teachers for GCSE coursework and research Delivered  INSET  sessions on IL and using web tools to develop teaching and learning
Next steps? Ensure relevant information literacy skills are supported  across the curriculum Provide relevant support to staff  in  accessing  and utilising quality resources in  planning  activities and lessons in  delivering  the teaching and learning of information literacy Help to  cascade  these skills down into key stage three and up into key stage five (A-level)
