Transaction Processing System
 A transaction process system (TPS) is an
information processing system for business
transactions involving the collection,
modification and retrieval of all
transaction data. Characteristics of a TPS
include performance, reliability and
consistency.
 TPS is also known as transaction
processing or real-time processing.
Where is it used?
 SHOPS WHICH DEAL WITH SALE AND
PURCHASE OF PRODUCTS.
 RETAIL SHOPS
 COFFEE SHOPS
 SUPERMARKETS
 BANKS
Examples
 Hewlett-Packard NonStop System
 Transarc Encina
 ATM’s
 Airline Reservation Systems
Office Automation Systems
Office automation system is an information
system which is computer based that
collects, processes, stores and transmits
electronic messages. Word processing,
document imaging or calendar are some
of the applications used in the office
automation systems.
Where is it used?
 Inside the office (Everyone)
 i.e. Sending messages through departments
Examples
 Electronic publishing
 MS Word
 Electronic communication
 Email, Fax
 Electronic collaboration
 Teleconferencing
 Image processing
 MS PowerPoint
 Office management
 Electronic scheduling, office accessories
Knowledge Work Systems
Knowledge work systems aid knowledge
workers. In general, knowledge workers are
people who hold formal university degrees
and who are often members of a
recognized profession, like engineers,
doctors, lawyers, and science. Their jobs
consist primarily of creating new information
and knowledge.
Where is it used?
 Law Firms
 Science Labs
 Universities which take research seriously
 Engineering Firms
Examples
 Computer-design system used by Odense
Shipyards
 PH stat
 Mycin
Decision Support Systems
A Decision Support System, as an entity, generally
refers to a grouping of integrated and unified
computer programs applied to provide nearly
instantaneous, interactive, and managerial level
mental processes support. It most likely includes
strong relational data base management (RDBMS)
capability for access to key company data kept on
the mainframe computer. A DSS usually supports a
form of alternatives development and selection.
Today, emphasis is more on planning for the future
rather than management control of the existing
situation and on bringing more logic and structure to
the normally haphazard managerial decision-
making processes
Where is it used?
 In large companies
 Managers who need data in order to make
a critical decision in operations.
Examples
 IT systems which give you manufacturing
data
 IT systems which give you sales data
 IT systems which help marketing
researches
Executive Support Systems
it is making short out of information which is
given by the lower level managers and
interpret into their organisation. To improve
the quality of decision making process
among executives.
Where is it used?
 Executive/Top management Level of the
companies
Examples
 Cambridge Systematic
 Typically each company has their own
modifications of this system based on the
liking of their management.
Group Decision Support
System
Group decision support system (GDSS)
technology supports project collaboration
through the enhancement of digital
communication with various tools and
resources. These types of programs are
used to support customized projects
requiring group work, input to a group and
various types of meeting protocols.
Where is it used?
 GDSS proponents claim that these sorts of
technologies can advance the promotion
of participation, help to streamline group
communications and foster learning
 Companies who focus on group projects
Examples
 ThinkTank
 MeetingWorks
