CHAPTER 18
THE ULTIMATE INSTRUCTION
If you listen to Krishna, victory is yours
If you don’t listen, you will be lost
You decide. The ball is in your court
LESSON-03
DOES KRISHNA PROMOTE CASTE SYSTEM?
No. Krishna promotes Varnashrama system. Varnashrama
system is a scientific system created by Krishna to give
equal opportunityto all the peopleto serve Krishna
according to their own nature.
As we have seen in earlier chapters, each person has a
uniquenature. Some peopleare intellectuals, some are
administrative, some are business-minded and some are
skillful. According to Varnashrama, the intellectualsare
called Brahmanas, the administrators are called
Kshatriyas, the business peopleare called Vaishyas and
the skillful are called Shudras. This system is created not
to divide the society but to unite them for higher cause of
serving Krishna. The society works when all four classes
cooperatewith each otherbecause each of them is
important.
Varnashrama system also prescribes duties to all these
classes according to their nature. But the ultimate aim of
all these duties is to please Krishna.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT DUTIES OF EACH CLASS OF
VARNASHRAMA SOCIETY?
Krishna explains: “Brahmanas work with peacefulness,
self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty,
knowledge, wisdom and religiousness.” Again, we see
that a brahmana is decided by qualities and not by birth. A
son of a lawyer has a better chanceand facility of
becoming a lawyer but he is not accepted automaticallyas
a lawyer. Similarly a son of a brahmana has a better
facility to become brahmana but he has to develop
brahminical qualities before being accepted as brahmana.
On the otherhand, one who has a brahmical qualities can
be accepted as brahmana even if by birth he belongs to
different category.
Kshatriyas work with heroism, power, determination,
resourcefulness, courage in battle, generosity and
leadership. Vaishyas have the duty of farming, cow
protectionand business. Shudras, according to their
nature, have the duty of serving others. Ultimately, all
these classes serve together to serve Krishna, the Supreme
Lord.
