Arjuna becomes confused on the battlefield when he sees that he must fight his friends and family who have sided with the Kauravas against the Pandavas. He questions Krishna about why he must engage in fighting. The story of King Krishnacandra and his minister Gopal Ban is then told, illustrating that whatever Krishna orchestrates is ultimately for the good of all, even if it is not immediately understood. When the king is saved from sacrifice by having lost a finger the day before, and Gopal Ban is saved by being imprisoned, it shows that Krishna's plans are perfect and for everyone's benefit, even in difficult situations like war.
