CHAPTER 02
WHO AM I
You are not this body; you are spirit self
The body goes on changing, but the change is never in
self
Lesson-02
KRISHNA’S SECOND INSTRUCTION: BOTH KRISHNA AND
WE ARE ETERNAL. HOWEVER, WE ARE NEVER EQUAL TO
KRISHNA, THE GOD.
Here, Krishna clearly states that He, the Supreme Lord
and we, His atomic parts are separate individuals and will
also remain so in the future. Only foolish peoplethink
that everything is one and the same. They think that
everyone is God. But such foolish statements are neither
accepted by scriptures nor by real spiritual teachers. It is
just an imagination to feel good about oneself.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GOD AND US?
God by definition is omniscient, omnipresent and
omnipotent–that means He knows everything, present
everywhere and can do anything. On the otherhand, we
don’t even know what we ate a week before. What to
speak of knowing everything? We can’t remain at one
place. What to speak of being present everywhere? And
we can’t even lick our elbow. What to speak of being able
to do anything? Still there are cheaters in society who
declare themselves to be God. But they are actually
oppositeof God.
Only a person without sound intelligence and
discrimination can say that everything is one. But when
we accept knowledge from Krishna or His representatives
(Guru), we come to right conclusionregarding God and
living entities. Real saints who are servants of Krishna
give us perfect knowledge and save us from dangerous
opinions of bogus saintswho say that we are same as
Krishna and everything is one.
People with no discriminationsay: everythingis one
So there was one guru and his disciple. They used to
wander from village to village, country to country,
begging and enlightening people. Thus they come to a
strange country. The disciple used to beg alms and goes to
marketplace for inquiry. He goes to grocery shop and asks
how much for a kilo of vegetables. “1 rupee per kilo, sir”
Then he goes to a sweetmeat shop and the shopkeeper
replies the same. The disciple expresses his surprise: How
come both the things have same prize? “Because of the
King, sir! He says that because everything is one,
everything has to have same price. So we have to sell
everything for 1 rupee, whatever thing you take in
whatever quantity.”
Disciple goes to his Guru in a happy mood. “Guruji, this
is the best place. We can just beg for 1 rupeeand then we
can get ample amount of sweets, because everything sells
here for same price by king’s order.”Guru says: “I think
the king is crazy. He does not have discrimination. The
place where peopledon’t have discrimination of good and
bad, small and big, is certainly a dangerous place. Better
if we leave immediately.” But the disciple insists and
Guru leaves saying: “Soon you are going to be in trouble.
Just remember me at that time.” Disciple begs 1 rupee
every day and eats lot of sweetmeat and gets really fat.
It so happensthat in that village, a villager’s goat dies due
to falling of neighbour’s wall. The villager goes to king
for justice. King orders: “It is all wall’s mistake. Hang the
wall.” Villager argues: “No my lord. The wall is a dead
thing. My neighbour should be hanged.” King: “Yes, call
the neighbour. Let us hang him.” He then summons the
neighbour to court. Neighbour argues: “Wall was mine.
But I did not build it. Hang the mason.” King orders: “Let
us hang the mason.” Mason says: “I could not build wall
properlybecause the tailor poked my one eye while
puttingthe thread in his needle. Hang the tailor.”King
orders: “Alright! Hang the tailor.”Tailor: “No sir, the
weaver gave me too long thread. So hang the weaver.”
King orders: “Hang the weaver.” Weaver says: “O king,
my thread has not poked his eye. It is the needle. So hang
the blacksmith.” King orders: “Hang the blacksmith.”
Blacksmith says: “Please don’t hang me my lord. I have a
family to maintain.” King: “You should have thought
about it before making the needle. Now it’s too late. We
have to hang you now.” Then the king orders his soldiers
to take the measurement of his neck to preparea fitting
noose. King declares: “15 days from now, we will hang
this blacksmith in public.”
Black smith becomes so afraid, that he stops eating food
and becomes very thin in 15 days. The king calls all
villagers to a ground where they would hang this fellow in
public. The soldiers bring the blacksmith to scaffold but
as they put the noose around his neck and try to hang him
they find out that the noose is too loose. King demands
reason. Soldiers say: “We had taken measurement 15 days
back. That time he was so fat. Now he is so thin that the
noose is not fitting.” The king says: “So many people
have gathered. We have to hang somebody. Find a person
whose neck is thick enough for the noose and let’s hang
him.”
The soldiers take his order and come to the disciple who
has become very fat now by eating sweetmeats everyday.
The soldiers capture him and take him to scaffold.
Disciple asks: “Why are you taking me?” Soldiers:
“Because your neck is fitting in the noose.”Disciple
understandsthat these are really the peoplewithout
discrimination. He remembers his Guru at this time of
difficulty and Guru arrives there. Guru says: “I will save
you from these fools. Just follow my plan.”Then Guru
whispers his plan in disciple’s ears.
King asks: “Why there is so delay?” Guru says: “I am his
Guru. Please hang me.” Disciple says: “No. Please hang
me.” King: “Why are you two so anxious of getting
hanged?” Guru replies: “Astrologically, this is a nice
muhurta. Whoever dies at this time becomes an emperor
of world next life.” Foolish King orders: “While I am
alive, you want to become emperor? Release these two
greedy rascals and hang me instead.”And the soldiers
hang the foolish king. This way the Guru saves his
disciple.
MORAL: The philosophyof “Everythingis one, all of us
are God” may sound fantasticbut it is very dangerous
falsephilosophywhich will lead to disasterin our life. A
real Guru never entertainssuch nonsense. Only such
Guru can lead us to rightpath of devotion to Krishna and
save us from wrong claims.
So to say that Krishna and us are at same level or that
everything is one is a wrong idea. The fact is that Krishna
is always the maintainer of living entities (that is all of us)
in all situations and both are NOT the same.
