CHAPTER 16
GOOD, BAD AND UGLY
Wise delight in Krishna, ordinary doubt Krishna and
fools deride Krishna
LESSON-02
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL ATTITUDE OF SUCH DEMON-LIKE
PEOPLE TOWARDS GOD AND DEVOTEES?
By nature, such demon-like peopleare envious of God
and want to minimize God. Similar attitudethey have
toward devotees of God. They consider God to be
ordinary while they think themselves as God.
Duryodhana’s prideand arrogance
There is a saying that pride comes before fall. In fact, one
who has pride is already fallen and what follows is just a
detail. Duryodhanawas very proud of his prowess and
wealth. He wanted to show it off to Pandavas whom he
cheated in a gambling match. Pandavas were residing in
forest and Duryodhanaout of his pride wanted to show of
his wealth to them so he plans his day out in forest. But
by his destiny, he gets captured by Gandharvas and later
rescued by Yudhishthir Maharaj from their custody. But
instead of being grateful to YudhishthirMaharaj, his envy
rather grows.
Duryodhanawas so arrogant that he never listened to his
elders like his mother, Gandhari and his uncleVidura.
When Vidura gave good advice, Duryodhanakicked him
out of his palace offending him with harsh words. When
Krishna, the Supreme Lord came to Duryodhanaas peace
messenger from Pandavas before the battle, Duryodhana
arrogantly denied the proposal and insulted even the
Supreme Lord Krishna by calling him just an ordinary
cowherd boy. Then he ordered his soldiers to capture
Krishna. When the soldiers were trying to capture
Krishna, Krishna showed His fierce universal form seeing
which all the assembly was dumbfound and could not do
anything. But even after that Duryodhanacould not
realize that Krishna is God. This is how ignorant
Duryodhanawas. Whole life he acted very sinfully and
even at the time of death he could not give up his envy
toward righteous Pandavas.
When Duryodhanawas born, all the donkeys started
braying. And other inauspicious symptoms were manifest.
Everybody advised his father, Dhritarashtra, to give up
the demoniac child, otherwise he would create havoc
later. Dhritarashtrabeing too attached could not give him
up. When he grew old he manifested all inauspicious
qualities.
MORAL: Pride, arrogance, envy destroysone’s character
and makes one blind.
HOW IS IT RELEVANT TO ME?
Good dog and bad dog
These are all the qualities inside us. There is a constant
battlethat is going on inside all of us. All of us have a
good dog and a bad dog inside us. Good dog is all the
divine qualities that are mentioned and bad dog is all the
demoniac qualities that are mentioned by Krishna.
Bad dog is Evil. It is anger, envy, lust, greed, arrogance,
ignorance, resentment, cruelty, lies, false pride,
superiority, and ego. The other dog is the good dog. It is
knowledge, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility,
kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth,
compassion and faith." Both dogs constantlyfight with
each other.
Question: Which one wins?
Answer: The one you feed.
Krishna asserts that the divine qualities make one
liberated and demoniac qualities make one bound. Which
one will you choose to be?
