Respiration involves the action of enzymes in cells and can occur aerobically or anaerobically. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to break down glucose into carbon dioxide and water, releasing energy. Anaerobic respiration breaks down glucose without oxygen, releasing less energy and products like alcohol or lactic acid. Lactic acid builds up in muscles during vigorous exercise without oxygen and is later removed by aerobic respiration in the liver during recovery.
