2D echocardiography is the basis of echocardiographic study, providing structural and functional information about the heart and guiding the use of additional techniques. M-mode echocardiography uses ultrasound to produce high-resolution images of a sliced structure over time, allowing analysis of motion. Standard echocardiographic views presented include the parasternal long and short axis, apical 4-chamber, 2-chamber, and 3-chamber views, as well as the subcostal and suprasternal views.
