This document proposes methods to reduce sediments accumulating in ship ballast tanks. It discusses how sediments currently accumulate due to small openings ("scallops") in tank structures becoming blocked. Three alternatives are proposed: 1) Increasing scallop size and adding more to improve sediment flow out of tanks; 2) Modifying deballasting systems to include multiple suction points to remove sediments; 3) Installing water jets to stir up bottom sediments for removal. The changes aim to minimize sediment buildup in tanks, reducing environmental impacts and maintenance costs.
