(a) How many cubic metres of water were used in 1960?
 2000 Billion cubic metres
 4000 Billion cubic metres
[2]
(b) Describe the trend in the usage of water shown in the graph in Figure 5 above.
 The usage has been rising rapidly. In 1900, 600 billion cubic metres of
water were used.
 By year 2000, 4000 billion cubic metres of water were used.

Identify the two largest use of water in this household.
 Kitchen
 Shower
Suggest a way in which you can reduce the amount of water that is used for
flushing and laundry.
 Flush only every 2nd time / use half flush (any logical answer)
 Wash only full load
[2]
[2]
Fig. 2
(d) Suggest two ways individuals or households can help to reduce the amount of water
consumption at home.
 Repair the pipes that cause water leakages.
 Take shorter showers.
 Turn off tap when not in use.
 Accept any other valid answers.
[2]
2 Fig. 3 shows the new outline map of Singapore, enlarged from the various phases of
land reclamation projects.
Fig. 3
(a) With reference to Fig. 3 above, identify areas A and B and state their land uses.
 A – Jurong Island. It is used for industries / manufacturing
 B – Changi. It is used as an airport / transport
[4]
A
B
(b) Identify ad explain two strategies that countries can use to solve the need for land?
 Intensify agriculture
o Use of technology to increase crop yield
o Use of technology to decrease space needed (vertical farming)
 Multiple urban landuse
o Combine uses (retail with residential)
o Shophouses / SOHO
[6]
(a) Why is land reclamation necessary in Singapore? State the name of the main reclamation
method used in Singapore.
 Due to small land area / increasing population
 Landfill method
[2]
(b) Using only a fully labelled diagram (s), explain how Singapore uses the landfill method to
reclaim land.
 1m per diagram
 Each diagram should come with appropriate labels [1m each]
[8]
4 (a) Fig. 4 shows the relationship between the development in transport and
communications and the ‘shrinking world’.
(i) With reference to Fig. 4, explain how the world is ‘shrinking’ with the development in
transport and communications.
 Increased accessibility and communications makes it faster for people
to travel over long distances within a short period of time.
 This makes the world seem smaller, giving rise to the phenomenon of a
‘shrinking world’.
[2]
(ii) State two ways in which a ‘shrinking world’ can benefit people.
 Business can be carried out across countries with greater ease
 Information, ideas, cultures and values can also be spread from one
place to another easily
 Any other valid responses.
[2]
(b) Fig. 4A and 4B show two types of telecommunications.
Fig. 4A
Fig. 4B
(i) With reference to Fig. 4A and 4B, identify the two types of telecommunication and
explain how they enable people in various parts of the world to communicate with
each other.
 Videoconferencing / two-way interaction in Fig. 4A
 Videoconferencing enables people in various parts of the world to
communicate with each other by allowing them to see and hear
other on a screen.
 Television / one-way interaction in Fig. 4B
 The television enables people to watch live events from around
the world
[4]
(ii) Your Primary school classmate has relocated to New York City in America.
Identify one way in which you can stay in contact with him. Explain a benefit of this
method.
 Social Media App (twitter / Fb / line / Weibo)
o Cheap, Fast and efficient
 Email / Telephone / Watsapp / SMS
o Convenient and efficient.
[2]
5 Study Fig. 5, which shows an area affected by drought.
Fig. 5
(a) Name one place in the world that is affected by droughts
 Saudi Arabia / African countries / India [1m]
[1]
(b) Explain the meaning of ‘scarce’.
 Rare and hard to find
[1]
(c) The Singapore Government has four taps that combine to supply the water that is
used in the country. Besides Desalination and Water from our reservoirs, identify the
other two taps and explain how they work to provide water to meet Singapore’s
demands.
 NEWater
o Recycle waste water
o Undergo filtration and UV cleaning
o Able to resolve industrial water needs
 Imported water
o Buying water from neighboring countries (Malaysia and
Indonesia)
o Cheap source or raw water.
[4]
(d) In the 1960s, Singpoare used a strategy to reduce the use of water due to drought.
Describe what were the measures implemented and how long it lasted.
[4]
o Water rationing
o Water rationing was implemented between 6pm to 6am
o Families only had access to water during that time.
o The rationing lasted a total of 10 months.
6 (a) What is the opportunity cost of conserving buildings in the foreground of Fig. 6
below?
[2]
 Reduced earnings
 Cannot build skyscrapers
(b) Identify two reasons for land being inhospitable. [2]
 Too hot / Too cold / Too high(elevation) / Too dangerous [any 2]
(c) Explain how deforestation leads to loss of animal habitat and soil erosion. [4]
 Animal Habitat – animals natural habitats in trees and forest floor
 Deforestation removes habitat and lead to extinction.
 Soil-erosion – forest helps hold the forest in place.
 Deforestation removes trees, allows water to wash the topsoil away.
(d) Explain what is meant when geographers say ‘land is a scarce resource’. [2]
 Limited amount of land
 Rare and hard to find
