3.1
The Behavioral Perspective
(Behaviorism)
• A theory of learning based on the idea
that all behaviors are acquired
through interaction with the
environment.
3.1
The Behavioral Perspective
(Behaviorism)
• Strict behaviorists believe that any person
regardless of genetic background, personality
traits, and internal thoughts can be trained
to perform any task, within the limits of their
physical capabilities.

CLASSICAL CONDITIONING
Implications of classical conditioning in the classroom:
• If a student associates negative emotional experiences with
school, then this can obviously have bad results, such as creating
a school phobia.
• If a student is bullied at school they may learn to associate the
school with fear.
• It could also explain why some students show a particular dislike
of certain subjects that continue throughout their academic
career. This could happen if a student is humiliated or punished
in class by a teacher.

OPERANT CONDITIONING
Implications of operant conditioning in the classroom:
• Teachers use positive reinforcement (rewards)
to encourage good behavior and academic
achievement, and negative reinforcement or
punishment to discourage disruptive
behavior.
OPERANT CONDITIONING
Implications of operant conditioning in the classroom:
• Nobody likes being punished. As a teacher with
an entire classroom to manage, you’ll eventually
find yourself in a position where a student’s
behavior needs correcting. At its core, positive
punishment is a form of behavior modification.
BEHAVIORISM
Adjusting the volume and tone of
your voice
• use a disappointed tone
• lower your voice
BEHAVIORISM
Assigning an unpleasant task
• A student acts out by throwing his papers into the air,
scattering them all over the floor. A direct positive
punishment is asking him to clean up the mess he made.
• A student is chewing gum in class when it’s against the
rules. The student is then made to scrape old gum off the
bottom of the desks in the classroom.
BEHAVIORISM
Adding rules
Additional rules will not only help the student correct their
behavior, they will act as a reminder of what happens when
you act out.
• Imposing time limits on free or creative time
• Establishing enforced quiet time
Remember, positive punishment is most effective when there’s a clear
correlation between the unwanted behavior and the resulting
consequence.
