This document presents a new technique for identifying the faulted phase in overhead distribution systems. The technique uses Clarke modal transformation and wavelet transform to analyze voltage waveforms from the distribution system. It is a two-step process:
1. Clarke modal transformation is used to identify whether a fault is grounded or ungrounded based on the magnitude of the ground mode component.
2. Discrete wavelet transform is then used to classify the specific faulted phase for both grounded and ungrounded faults. Phase shift angle is also analyzed to help determine the faulted phase. The technique aims to address issues with current transformer behavior during faults that can reduce accuracy of fault identification. MATLAB and ATP/EMTP software are used
