This document reviews explicit approximations to the Colebrook equation for calculating hydraulic friction factor in turbulent pipe flow. The Colebrook equation is implicit and requires iterative solving, whereas explicit approximations allow direct calculation of friction factor. The paper evaluates existing explicit approximations compared to the iterative Colebrook solution over the full range of Reynolds numbers and relative roughness. Most approximations are found to have deviations from the Colebrook solution of only a few percent, making them accurate alternatives for situations where iterative solving would be impractical, such as in pipe network simulations requiring hundreds or thousands of friction factor calculations.
