Quizzing students regularly is an effective formative assessment technique that allows teachers to evaluate student understanding and adjust lessons accordingly. Formative quizzes should be low-stakes to encourage students to take risks and learn from any mistakes without stress. Teachers are encouraged to use tools like Show My Homework or Quizlet to conveniently create and assign review quizzes.

As regular quizzing is ‘low-stakes’, students are able to improve their knowledge and understanding by making mistakes and learning from them. Ways you can do this in your classroom: • Begin each lesson with a short review of learning, this could be 5 multiple choice questions displayed as a starter activity. This gives you the opportunity to assess what needs to be revisited / how far you can now move on. • If you require students to read something at home, provide them with the text and a number of questions to assess their understanding of what they have read. • A formative quiz could be set at the end of a unit / section of work to assess understanding. • Vocabulary or spelling quizzes can be set up on Show My Homework. • Quizlet: an online tool allowing you to create your own quizzes to be completed in class or at home.
