A large wildfire in 2003 burned over 20,000 hectares of forest in the Crowsnest area, creating a 6km wide and 50m tall wall of flames with an energy output equivalent to an atomic explosion every 30 minutes. The fire negatively impacted the timber industry, tourism, and local businesses in the area. While the burned landscape initially looked devoid of life, fires can create ecological diversity by allowing rich undergrowth to develop where it was previously absent, though habitats and resources were initially lost.
