A random forest fire in the Crowsnest Pass escalated into a large wildfire in August 2003, forcing the evacuation of the Hamlet of Hillcrest. The Crowsnest Fire burned 20,000 hectares of forest. Some burnt lumber was salvaged by the Spray Lakes Sawmill, lessening the economic impact. While forest fires initially harm the environment and economy, they create ecological diversity by allowing new undergrowth to develop.
