The Crowsnest Fires in August 2003 caused extensive damage, burning 20,000 hectares of land with flames reaching 50 meters high every 30 minutes. The fires destroyed homes and negatively impacted tourism and local businesses. However, the fires also presented opportunities for the logging industry through salvaging burnt wood and for ecological regrowth of rich undergrowth.
