This document provides an overview and analysis of several narrative theories in film. It discusses Tzvetan Todorov's theory that narratives follow a three-part structure of equilibrium, disruption of equilibrium, and return to equilibrium. It also summarizes Claude Levi-Strauss's concept of binary oppositions and Vladimir Propp's identification of 8 character types that appear in folktales. Examples are given of how the films The Shining and Texas Chainsaw Massacre use Todorov's and Levi-Strauss's theories respectively.
