Using Technology as a Medium
The excitement in students should be rather about the
related activities and tasks which will be performed or
done using technology as a medium not the technology
alone.
Using Technology Effectively
“Effective use of technology in education” is perhaps a
new discipline that needs to be taught.
- Edtech Review February 2016
• Learning Outcomes and Pedagogical Approach
• Educational technology should focus on what students need to learn,
rather than on how to use a specific device
• Technology opens the window to greater connections with people,
expanding content farther than ever before, and the ability to create new
ideas.
• The excitement in students should be rather about the related activities
and tasks which will be performed or done using technology as a medium
not the technology alone.

Self Assessment
How are teachers using technology "with" their students?
• Are they using technology daily?
• Are they using a variety of tools to complete assignments?
• Are they creating projects that show a deeper understanding of
the content?
• Are they leveraging digital programs to introduce and/or reteach
skills and concepts?

Common Objections
• Don't have the technology tools or access to the
technology.
• Uncomfortable, feel inadequate.
• Doesn't fit with what you are teaching.
• Too much time…teaching the standards.
Those born into an innate "new culture" while the digital immigrants are old-
world settlers, who have lived in the analogue age and immigrated to the
digital world…Marc Prensky
