Mechanical
How things work. An interest in constructing something by hand that
can be seen, touched, or held. Higher scores tend to be interested in
the details of production and implementation. Lower scores can
become impatient or bored with such details.
Outdoor
Connection with the outside world. Higher scores can find it more
energizing to move about, particularly getting outside, and can lose
energy when required to spend sustained periods of time indoors.
Lower scores can find it easier to maintain their energy and vigor even
when spending a sustained period of time indoors.
Scientific
Why things are the way they are. A curiosity for discovering what may
be behind the scenes or beneath the surface. Higher scores often
enjoy more complicated problems involving careful analysis. Lower
scores can find it easier to “get moving” without all of this analysis.
Artistic
Visual impact. A sensitivity for how things look and appear. For higher
scores a picture truly is worth a thousand words. How a report or
presentation looks or appears is important. For lower scores the visual
aspects become less important.
Literary
The written word. A sensitivity for language and communication,
specifically in written form. Higher scores can be more aware of how
words or phrases are crafted — the subtleties and nuances of
language. Lower scores may grow impatient if “the story” is too long.
Musical
Auditory expressions. A sensitivity to sound. Higher scores notice
things like tone of voice, background noise, or the “buzz” in a
workplace. Higher scores can become distracted by unwanted noise.
Lower scores can find it easier to “tune out” the outside noise.
Clerical
Administrative processes. The creation and maintenance of routines
and systems that bring order to things. Higher scores bring discipline to
tracking and routines. Lower scores may grow impatient with the rules,
policies, and regulations that can accompany this interest.
Numerical
Numbers and data. Maintaining records and tracking progress against
quantifiable results. Higher scores look to supporting facts and data to
measure effectiveness and make decisions. Lower scores can find the
level of detail that can accompany this interest to be de-energizing.
Persuasive
Engaging with others verbally. Using persuasive language to motivate
others to accept ideas, opinions, or proposals. Higher scores want to
be sold and expect others to verbally convince them. Lower scores can
perceive this same verbal approach as potentially hiding flaws in the
idea, opinion, or proposal — as lacking supporting data or facts.
Social Service
Personally helping and supporting others. Higher scores can be
personally motivated to help others — sometimes just for the sake of
helping others — and can often have a higher sensitivity to the
interpersonal dynamics within the group or workplace. Lower scores
can be just as helpful as those with higher scores when what others
need help with is personally interesting to them or furthers the goals
and objectives of the group or business.
