A new technique allows for low cost and near real-time audio distribution over IP networks for community radio. It digitizes and compresses audio, transmits it over the internet in packets, then decodes and converts it back to audio. While this allows widespread distribution, packet loss during transmission can result in temporary audio interruptions or distortions. Special protocols aim to mitigate these issues to provide high quality streaming audio. Hardware devices are also available to encode and decode streams for reliable distribution without needing extensive network knowledge.
