Sensory memory briefly stores sensory information before it enters short-term memory. There are two types of sensory memory - iconic memory for visual information lasting about 1 second, and echoic memory for auditory information lasting 2-3 seconds. Short-term memory can hold around 7 items for 20-30 seconds through rehearsal before information transfers to long-term memory or is forgotten. Working memory involves actively holding and manipulating information needed for complex tasks using the central executive and two subsystems for visual-spatial and phonological information. Attention plays a key role in selecting relevant information from our senses to enter short-term memory for further processing.
