40. There are eight ve tical columns called _________. They are numbered from I to VIII.
He generalized the study of the elements then known as the study of a mere groupsA
In Mendeleev’s pe iodic table, he left some blank spaces. These vacant spaces were left for
including elements that were not discovered at that time.
B
Mendeleev could also predict the prope ties of these unknown elements, on the basis of the
prope ties of the elements lying adjacent to these vacant spaces. He predicted the presence
of three elements. They were named as Eka boron, Eka-aluminium and Eka-silicon. The
prope ties of these three elements were similar to the actual elements discovered later. Eka-
boron was similar to Scandium, Eka-aluminium was similar to Gallium and Eka-silicon was
similar to Ge manium.
C
When noble gases were discovered later, they could be accommodated in the pe iodic table in
the fo m of a separate group without disturbing the positions of the other elements.
D
He was able to co rect the values of the atomic masses of elements like gold and platinum, he
placed these elements going st ictly by the simila ities in their prope ties.
E
