Recent economic and social changes in China have reduced pressure for political reform to some extent. Before reforms, Chinese people wanted more political freedom, democratic structures, free speech and less corruption. China has since implemented social and economic reforms like relaxing population controls, encouraging private business, and improving healthcare and education. However, some Chinese still desire reforms like allowing more open elections and political participation, reducing censorship and inequality, and giving Tibet more autonomy. So while living standards have risen for many due to reforms, there remains pressure from some for further political changes.
