They begin as a tingling or itching sensation and develop into fluid-filled blisters that eventually burst, crust over, and heal within 2-4 weeks. Oral thrush is a yeast infection caused by Candida that appears as white lesions in the mouth. It can be treated with antifungal medication. Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes white lace-like patches or red lesions on the tongue and inner cheeks that may be painful. Its cause is unknown but it involves the immune system.
