• Examples of implementing cloud computing in libraries and
    other domains.
Why library automation has not been success so far in
                many of the college libraries?

• Lack of infrastructure (building)

 there are 344 government colleges. Many of the colleges established
in 2007-2008 have no own buildings.

 In a recent study done by Balasubramanya & Guruprasad (2011) have
found that, of the 10 government degree colleges they have surveyed
in Mysore district, none of them have separate buildings for libraries.

 Lack of Man Power Support

There is no proper plan for deciding in how much funds or financial
resources should be utilized for subscribing scholarly journals/books and
maintaining library aesthetics or day to day functions.

• Issues in ICTs implementation in libraries

 In 2009 DCE in Gulbarga University Library and Karnataka State College
Librarians Association (KSCLE) has organized week long program for all the
government college librarians to train them in using contemporary
     technologies for library management

 In 2011 DCE in association with National Informatics Centre (NIC) provided
hands-on training in using E-Granthalaya a free library automation
software developed by NIC for 60 government college librarians in
     Karnataka (Muthuraja, 2011).

 Still the issues of availability of hardware requirements and software
selection for library automation have remained unresolved.

So how do we overcome these problems? One solution that
we can thought of is “Cloud Computing”
What is cloud computing and why we need to
             go for cloud computing?

• What is “Cloud Computing”?

“Cloud computing is a style of computing in which massively scalable IT-related
capabilities are provided as a service to external customers using Internet
  technologies” (Gartner, 2009).

“Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a
product, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to
computers and other devices as a metered service over a network (typically the
  Internet)” (Wikipedia 2012).

“Cloud computing means using Web services for our computing needs which
could include using software applications, storing data, accessing computing
power, or using a platform to build applications” (Kroski, 2009).
Important Layers of Cloud Computing

                          SaaS
                  (Software as a Service)
Examples : E-mails, CRM, ILS, Google Docs, etc

                          PaaS
                 (Platform as a Service)
           Examples: Application Development,

                          IaaS
              (Infrastructure as a Service)
Examples : Network, Data Storage, Hosting etc.
How cloud computing architecture can help
     colleges to automate their libraries?

• Reduce dependency on infrastructure ( server and other
  hardware peripherals)

• Cost effectiveness

• Duplication of work can be avoided

• Browser based technology (virtualization) 24/7 Access

• Integration and exchange of data and others
Cloud Computing Service Providers

• Amazon EC2 (Elastic Computing Cloud)

• Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Services)

• Google Apps

• Windows Azure

• IBM Smart Cloud, etc.,

Issues in Implementing Cloud
                Computing

• Data Privacy (Patron Records)
• Data Security or Data Ownership (Orwellian
  Intrusion, Kiroski, 2009)
• Need Internet for using cloud computing
• Data Reliability
• Data Lock-in (Interoperability), etc.,
Thank You

  • 7. • Issues in ICTs implementation in libraries  In 2009 DCE in Gulbarga University Library and Karnataka State College Librarians Association (KSCLE) has organized week long program for all the government college librarians to train them in using contemporary technologies for library management  In 2011 DCE in association with National Informatics Centre (NIC) provided hands-on training in using E-Granthalaya a free library automation software developed by NIC for 60 government college librarians in Karnataka (Muthuraja, 2011).  Still the issues of availability of hardware requirements and software selection for library automation have remained unresolved. So how do we overcome these problems? One solution that we can thought of is “Cloud Computing”
  • 8. What is cloud computing and why we need to go for cloud computing? • What is “Cloud Computing”? “Cloud computing is a style of computing in which massively scalable IT-related capabilities are provided as a service to external customers using Internet technologies” (Gartner, 2009). “Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices as a metered service over a network (typically the Internet)” (Wikipedia 2012). “Cloud computing means using Web services for our computing needs which could include using software applications, storing data, accessing computing power, or using a platform to build applications” (Kroski, 2009).
  • 9. Important Layers of Cloud Computing SaaS (Software as a Service) Examples : E-mails, CRM, ILS, Google Docs, etc PaaS (Platform as a Service) Examples: Application Development, IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) Examples : Network, Data Storage, Hosting etc.
  • 10. How cloud computing architecture can help colleges to automate their libraries? • Reduce dependency on infrastructure ( server and other hardware peripherals) • Cost effectiveness • Duplication of work can be avoided • Browser based technology (virtualization) 24/7 Access • Integration and exchange of data and others
  • 11. Cloud Computing Service Providers • Amazon EC2 (Elastic Computing Cloud) • Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Services) • Google Apps • Windows Azure • IBM Smart Cloud, etc.,

Editor's Notes

  • #9: In simple terms cloud computing can be defined as “ applications that can be accessed or used through the Internet” Scalable: computing (ofanetwork)abletobeexpandedto cope with increaseduse.
  • #10: CRM-Customer Relationship Management,ILS-Integrated Library Systems etcSAAS: Software is provided as a service which can be accessed through the Internet or web browser (in our case library management systems, Online databases, etc)Example : Koha ILS in Mysore University Library Up gradation, maintenance, trouble shooting and other errors will be taken care by the those who provide cloud computing service. We just have to use the S/W. PAAS: (Platform as a Service): With PaaS, a computing platform is provided which supplies tools and a development environment to help companies build, test, and deploy Web-based applications (Kiroski, 2009).IaaS: (Infrastructure as a Service): IaaS is also know HaaS (Hardware as a service). Storage, networking and hosting of websites or e-learning modules other infrastructure facilities are provided as a service. Example: Mysore University Library has no server or other hardware peripherals in the library but they have rented some storage space through cloud computing service provider and have hosted their OPAC. This minimize the effort, time and cost in having infrastructure in our library.
  • #11: One of the major benefit of the cloud computing is it literary help us to overcome from having infrastructure to host or to install s/w in our office or library. We just have to rental some space on thee cloud or use application software through the service provider what we use. Example: Electricity Cost Effective : It minimizes the dependency technical man power and up gradation and maintenance of hardware and software in our library. Example : E-granthalaya. When DCE trained 60 libraries for automating their library by using E-Granthalaya they had to carry the CPU for installing the s/w. That kind of problem or difficulties can be avoided.Duplication of work: This one of the major benefit for at least college libraries. Many of us having similar documents (At least colleges affiliated to Mysore University) in stand alone or system that is not connected through the Internet we have to key in each of the record every time. But if use web based S/W we can share or use same to catalogue the library. Example : Copy cataloguing.Integration and exchange of data: We can integrate data through multiple locations or multiple formats. For example : Linking to Google Book Search or Amazon and other libraries. Data can be shared with other libraries without much hassles
  • #18: 3. Needed high bandwidth for faster Internet connections Orwellian Intrusion:Amazonin 2009 has without any reason had removed George Orwell books from its Kindle E-Book Readers. That raises the issue of who owns the content or data ownership. Data Lock-in is related to interoperability Data reliability
