Editor's Notes

  • #28: 27
  • #29: 28
  • #30: Objective and Background The objective of the Digital Construction Community is to showcase the solutions that are or have been developed and adopted in the capital projects industry. It is not intended to be a hard sell activity but more of an opportunity to share the problems identified and the solutions that were developed and implemented. It may include short clip videos and testimonials from clients in in way that depicts the message and potential outcome.   The Webinar Content and Presentation This describes the problem and the solution that was adopted and why. It also considers the options and who chose it and if there were any compromises. It looks at the selected hardware and why? COMIT very much encourages having the client part or fully deliver the presentation on behalf of the member. Benefits The webinar will demonstrate the benefits arising from the solution/s and any future opportunities that may be shared with the wider COMIT community or wider construction professionals.     Post Webinar Availability Once the webinar is complete it will be converted to a suitable video format and then uploaded (with agreement) to social media (you tube/other) for future learning or sharing.   Case Study In addition, a case study also becomes an option and would be made available through the COMIT website. For full case studies this should describe how the solution impacted the business process and any other important factors that were considered.
  • #31: COMIT Initiative. Opportunity to improve The construction sector is one of the largest in the world economy, with about $10 trillion spent on construction-related goods and services every year. It 10% of the UK GDP However, the industry’s productivity has trailed that of other sectors for decades, and there is a $1.6 trillion opportunity to close the gap. Construction-related spending accounts for 13% of the world’s GDP Globally, construction sector labour-productivity growth averaged 1 percent a year over the past two decades, compared with 2.8 percent for the total world economy and 3.6 percent for manufacturing.

COMIT Initiative. Opportunity to improve Construction Productivity Survey confirms many reasons for this poor performance. The industry is extensively regulated, very dependent on public-sector demand, and highly cyclical. Informality and sometimes corruption distort the market. Construction is highly fragmented. Contracts have mismatches in risk allocations and rewards, and often inexperienced owners and buyers find it hard to navigate an opaque marketplace. The result is poor project management and execution, insufficient skills, inadequate design processes, and underinvestment in skills development, R&D, and innovation. barriers to higher productivity and ways of overcoming them have been known for some time, but the industry has been in deadlock. Most individual players lack both the incentives and the scale to change the system. However, there are forces lowering the barriers for change: rising requirements and demand in terms of volume, cost, and quality; larger-scale players and more transparent markets, and disruptive new entrants; more readily available new technologies, materials, and processes; and the increasing cost of labour with partial restrictions on migrant workers. Construction-sector participants should rethink their operating approaches to avoid being caught out in what could be the world’s next great productivity story

  • #46: Date: Thursday 27 September 2018 Location: The O2, Peninsula Square, London SE10 0DX Conference start time: 08:00 Conference end time: 16:30 Join us at the O2 Blue Door Conference on Thursday 27 September 2018, where we discuss the five topics that affect the future of every UK business At O2 Live in London on 27 September we’ve taken five of the technologies and challenges that our customers most often discuss with us, and built a series of intensive, deep dive conference sessions around them. 1. Big Data & Artificial Intelligence (AI) As an ever-increasing number of devices connect across mobile and fixed networks we’re seeing our data pools turn in to data lakes, and over time in to data oceans. But while everyone talks about it, how many people know how to really make use of the data they have, especially in a landscape of changing compliance and regulation? Get it right and the benefits can be transformational, providing valuable insights and guidance for improving staff engagement and better customer experiences. 2. Customer Experience The way we interact with each other has changed. Screen time is replacing face-to-face time at home and at work. Browsing in high street stores is being replaced by browsing online. Hiring talent is no longer constrained by geography, and global markets have never been so easy to enter. Digital changes how people expect to interact and engage, and provides the tools and services your teams expect to use. The digital evolution is more than a strategy, it’s essential for survival. Get the digital tools and services right and your business can flourish. 3. Cyber Security We are living in a world which is increasingly connected, from eCommerce and cloud based solutions to IoT devices, national infrastructure and digital currencies. The solutions are designed to deliver more effective collaboration, enhanced engagement with customers, and digital insights for better decision making. But with these productivity and efficiency improvements comes a rise in new threats that look to steal, compromise, embarrass, or hold to ransom an organisation’s data. And there’s one clear element that can make or break your cyber security efforts: the human factor. 4. Future Workplace The way we work has changed. Whether in the office or in the field, technology continues to provide an answer. But is that answer always the right one for you? How can you ensure that the efficiencies and productivity promised can be realised? How will your recruitment practices ensure you have the right talent on board? And how can you foster the culture needed within your teams to embrace the changes that are coming? Internet of Things (IoT) What is the true potential of the Internet of Things? And how is 5G poised to create an additional surge towards the Internet of “Everything”? We talk about IoT providing deeper insights into our employees, customers and citizens, and the general world around us. With devices connected on this scale the possibilities seem almost limitless, but only when we ask the right questions. Which of these issues concern you the most? Registration is now open, and places are limited. So why not register straight away and reserve your place on the Deep Dive conference session of your choice?
