Jeff Bezos started Amazon in 1994 after leaving his job on Wall Street to begin an online bookselling business out of his garage. The company was named Amazon after the Amazon River, and Bezos wanted it to become the largest online store in the world. Within two months, Amazon was selling to all 50 US states and 45 countries. It expanded its product offerings and soon allowed customers to buy anything from A to Z online. Amazon grew rapidly and went public in 1997, becoming the largest online retailer in the world and pioneering e-commerce.
