Concept of teaching and learning
INTRODUCTION
• Teaching and learning are the activities
which are interrelated to each other.
• It involves the process of transferring
knowledge
• Transfer of knowledge occurs from the
one who is giving to the one who is
receiving.
Cont…
Hence it is concluded that:
• To teach is to make someone learn.
• Teaching is the cause and learning is the
effect.
Concept of teaching learning
– Teaching is to fill in the mind of learner by information and
knowledge of facts for future use. The process of teaching
includes learner, teacher curriculum and other variables
organised in a systematic way to attain some pre-determined
goal. The purpose of teaching is to cause motivation to learn.
– All learning involves activities. These activities involve either
physical or mental activities. They may be simple mental
activities or complex, involving various muscles, bones, etc.
Aspect of teaching and learning:
Ways of teaching
Authority teaching
Facilitator teaching
Delegator teaching
Demonstrate teaching
 hybrid teaching
Authority way of teaching:
i. completely teacher centred
ii. Lengthy sessions
iii. students absorb the knowledge
Facilitator way of teaching:
i. Promotes self learning
ii. Facilitate critical thinking
skills.
iii. Enables self actualization.
Demonstrator
i. Teacher centred way of teaching
ii. Includes students involvement
iii. Build observation skills among
learner
iv. Enables to understand what learners
need to know
Delegator way of teaching
i. Group method of teaching
ii. Inquiry based learning
iii. Teacher and learner works mutually
towards the same goal
Hybrid way of teaching
i. Also called blended style of teaching
ii. Uses Integrated approach
iii. Teacher adopts the way as per student’s need
TEACHING
Introduction:
– Teaching is to fill in the mind of learner by information
and knowledge of facts for future use.
– The process of teaching includes learner, teacher
curriculum and other variables organised in a systematic
way to attain some pre-determined goal.
– The purpose of teaching is to cause motivation to learn.
Definitions of Teaching:
Acc. To Albert Einstein-
“the supreme art of teaching is to awaken joy in creative expression and
knowledge”.
Acc. To Burton-
“teaching is the stimulation, guidance, direction and encouragement of
learning”.
Characteristics of teaching:
Teaching is the Cause of learning
Provision of desirable information
Need efficient planning
Provides opportunity for activity
Sympathetic nature
Cooperative
Concept of teaching and learning
Theories of Teaching
Types of theories of teaching:
Formal theory of teaching
1.Descriptive theory of teaching
1.Normative theory of teaching
Concept of teaching and learning
1. Formal theory of teaching:
 Meutic theory of teaching:
• this theory conceives that teaching process helps to recollect or unfold that knowledge with questioning
techniques.
• the socratic’s method is an essential element for this theory.
• The heredity plays an important teaching process
 Communication theory of teaching:
• this theory of teaching is based upon assumption that the teacher possesses all knowledge and
information which student does not possess
• the teacher presents , explains , demonstrates and performs in the classroom
Moulding theory of teaching:
• John dewey is the advocate of this moulding theory of teaching.
• It has the focus on shape, form and mould of the students behaviour, human
personality is formed, shaped and moulded by their environment.
–
Mutual inquiry theory:
• this theory assumes that each individual has the capacity to discover new knowledge
with mutual inquiry.
• True knowledge is inquiry. This theory of teaching is clearly applicable to research and
art.
2) Descriptive theory of teaching:
• it is based upon certain propositions
and certain observations.
• The purpose of this theory is to
predict the relationship and
effectiveness of variables of
teaching
3) Normative theory of teaching
a)The Cognitive theory of
teaching
Psychological theory of
teaching
Theory of teacher behaviour General theory of teaching
Normative theory
Concept of teaching and learning
Theory of teacher behavior:
– M. Meox and B. O. Smith have defined the
term teacher -behaviour.
– “teacher behaviour consists of those acts that
the teacher performs typically in the
classroom in order to induce-learning”.
– Theory of teacher behaviour also explains the
relationship of variables, it is based upon 2
postulates
i) Teacher behaviour is social in nature:
Teacher behaviour is concerned with the classroom verbal and non verbal
interaction.
In the process of interaction, teacher and student both participate.
ii) Teacher behaviour is relative:
Teacher activities are the product of social conditions and are related to the
cultural settings in which teachers performs the teaching tasks.
Teacher-behaviour is good or bad, effective or ineffective, it can be judged
with reference to a particular culture value system and set of objectives.
Psychological theory of teaching :
• this theory considers teaching a sort
contractual relationship between the
teachers and the pupils.
• The relationship consists of certain
activities to be performed by a teacher such
as :
• analysing teaching task, determining
learning goals, identifying entering
behaviour and selecting teaching strategy.
General theory of teaching :
– S.C.T Clarke has formulated a general theory
of teaching.
– It assumes that teaching is the process which
is designed and performed to produce
changing behaviour of students.
– The teaching activities can be very diverse and
vary also at different levels of teaching and
objective. All these combinations are possible
in teaching process.
Concept of teaching and learning
Introduction:
– Learning is a key process in human behaviour.
All living is learning.
– If we compare the simple, crude ways in which
a child feels and behaves, with the complex
modes of adult behaviour, his skills, habits,
thought, sentiments and the like- we will know
what difference learning has made to the
individual
Definitions of Learning:
 Gales and others:
“Learning is the modification of behaviour through experience and training.”
 . Charles E. Skinner:
“Learning is the process of progressive behaviour adoptions.”
 H.J. Klausmeir:
“Learning is a process whereby a change in behaviour results from some of experience,
activity, training, observation and the like”.

– Constructivist:
we construct our own knowledge of the
world based on individual experiences
and internal knowledge.
Learning is based on how the individual
interprets and creates the meaning of
his or her experiences.
Relationship between teaching and learning:
1) GOAL:
teaching: to impart knowledge and to monitor change
in behavior
Learning: to understand and apply knowledge
2) Authority :
teaching: possess higher authority
Learning: possess less authority
3) Dependence in Teaching and
Learning:
For the teaching process to be actualized,
teachers need to have students as recipients of
novel knowledge.
On the other hand, learners do not always
need teachers to learn something as mere
solitary experiences can bring about
realizations
4. Expertise in Teaching and Learning
– Teaching is characterized by a higher level of
expertise as compared to learning.
5. Curiosity in Teaching and Learning
– The learning process is improved by piquing
students’ curiosity. Alternatively, the teaching
process is improved by looking for a way to
arouse learners’ curiosity.
6. Feedback in Teaching and Learning
teaching helps others by observing and aptly pointing
out which behaviors should be retained and altered while
the learning undertaking is marked by being able to
understand the feedback as well as apply it to future
behavior.
7. Extent (with respect to existence) of Teaching
and Learning
– Largely, learning is possible until our last breath. As
for teaching, people can still learn from the teachings
of someone who has already passed away.
Conclusion:
– Teaching and learning are the activities which
are interrelated to each other and involves the
process of transferring knowledge from the one
who is giving to the one who is receiving.
Learning is a key process in human behaviour.
learning is a change in behaviour, influenced by
previous behaviour. Teaching is an important
part of the process of education. Its special
function is to impart knowledge , to develop
understanding skills. It is the communication
between two or more person, who influence
each other by idea and learn something in the
process of interaction.
