Starting and
Shutting Down
A Computer
Before we begin, let
us have a short review
of your learning from
the previous
module.
1. What is a hazard?
2. What are the
examples of hazards?

Steps in Connecting Peripherals
of a PC
1. Attach the Video
Graphics Array (VGA)
cable connector to the
VGA port at the
back of the computer
and of the monitor.
2. Plug the
keyboard
cable to the
PS/2 or USB
3. Plug the
mouse cable
to the PS/2
or USB port.
4. Plug the LAN cable and
other peripheral devices.
5. Connect the power
cable.

Connecting of Wires and Peripheral Devices
1. Plug the other end of
the power cable from the
system unit to one of the
220V
power ports at the back of
the AVR.
2. Connect the other
end of the power cable
from the monitor to
one of the 220Vpower
ports at the back of
3. Plug in the
AVR’s power
connector to
the wall outlet.

1. Turn the AVR
ON by toggling
the switch ON. A
red-Light
Emitting Diode
(LED)
will be lit.
2. Press the power
button on the system
unit. A steady power
LED light
indicator is seen once
the power button is
pressed.
3. Turn the monitor ON. Most PC
monitors’ ON/OFF button is
located on the
bottom corner of the screen (see
below). When the monitor is ON,
the button
often lights up green or blue.
4. If you have a printer, turn it on
when needed.

will see the user account login
screen. If you
have one user account only with no
password, it may go straight to the

you may see more than one user
account on
the login screen. When you click the
corresponding icon of your name,
you will be
asked for a password. The main user
or administrator has set this up for

When to log
off a user
account?
When you are attending a very important
matter and have to leave the computer for
a while and you don’t want to start the
computer all over again, you could log off
your user account. Another reason why
you log off your user account is when
another user of the computer wants to log
in his/her own account while yours is
logged in. In doing so, see to it that your
documents have already been saved.

Features and
Functions
Checking the specifications of your
computer hardware is not only
performed by
looking at the hardware itself. We
can also use the software side of the
computer
through the system features of the
operating system.

What is the difference between log
off and shut down? Log off lets you
sign out of
your user account. Any programs
running are ended. However, the
PC is still ON.

Lastly,
disconnect the plug of the

other cables are
connected?
3. Why should we never force a connection when attaching
cables?
4. How helpful is Task Manager to exit or close applications?
How is it accessed?
