INTRODUCTION
• This is an analysis report on how effective are the measures taken by
the Canadian Government to flatten the curve of COVID-19 cases.
• Is the daily rate of increase in cases gradually declining?
ANALYSIS APPROACH
• A dataset related to COVID-19 was chosen from the following website
for the analysis:
https://www.visualcapitalist.com/category/covid-19/
• Analysis on :
• Which are the countries who could flatten the curve?
• How different are the timelines of measures taken by these countries?
• How distinct were their implementation of measures?
• A conclusion on the effectiveness of the measures taken by Canada
ANALYSIS
COUNTRIES AFFECTED THE MOST
TOP 3 COUNTRIES WITH HIGHEST NO. OF CASES
IMPACT OF MEASURES TAKEN IN DIFFERENT TIMELINES
CHINA
• Origin of the pandemic – November 17th, 2019
• Flattened the curve almost after 3 months.
• Aggressive measures : massive lockdowns, electronic surveillance,
etc.
• First case was confirmed on February 28th – a returning traveller.
• Within one month flattened the curve.
• Only western nation following an articulated elimination strategy.
• Most cases are returning travellers.
• Remaining few case clusters are being traced and further stamped out.
• Still under intense lockdown, rigorous quarantine at the borders, expanded
testing and contact tracing.
NEW ZEALAND
• First case was confirmed on 27th January – a returning traveller.
• Ranked among the top 15 countries with highest number of cases.
• Major focus on community based measures – social distancing,
cleaning public places, self-isolation, mandatory quarantine.
• Still exponentially increasing curve.
CANADA
WHY DIFFERENCES IN IMPACT OF MEASURES?
•When lockdown was implemented.
•How intensive was the lockdown.
•How intensive were the measures.
CONCLUSION
THE MEASURES TAKEN ARE EFFECTIVE, BUT THEY WERE TAKEN A BIT
LATE. EVENTUALLY THE CURVE WILL FLATTEN. WE JUST HAVE TO
FIGHT THE VIRUS PATIENTLY.
RECOMMENDATIONS
• We need to increase the intensity of the lockdown and other measures.
This can be done through:
• Having strict limitations on travelling and monitoring unnecessary travellers.
• Compulsory quarantine for travellers and close contacts of infected people.
• Government needs to supply adequate personal protection equipment
(PPE).
• Government should incorporate the elimination strategy including intensive
contact tracing used by New Zealand along with the current safety
protocols.
